Master chef, right now, is advertised as a skill that requires help from
others to obtain the ingredients. For some, this actually works, but then,
there is plant lore.

Plant lore is a hard block on master chef - if you don't have plant lore, you
cannot do any recipe that requires any plant (potato/apple/onion/whatever),
even if someone else picks up this plant for you. And to make things worse,
the "entrees" category has plants in pretty much every recipe (that I could
find so far), so without plant lore, you cannot advance the skill further.

Could this be altered, so that you can still cook those potatoes if someone
else picks them up for you?

Or even better, could the easy plants be recognizable by default? It's kinda
silly that my character can cook complicated foods and cast various complex
spells, but cannot recognize an apple :)

"Could this be altered, so that you can still cook those potatoes if someone

No.

Besides the easy "this is a mulitiplayer game" reasoning, this is also a good
opportunity to find other, non-plant-lore sources of food with specific
handles. An experienced master chef already knows that a fair number of food
items in BatMUD can be "salvaged" for their components -- you can bake a cake
with an order of eggs and bacon, for example. There are multiple farms that
can be raided for their produce and sometimes meat.

And I can personally tell you, as someone who has some experience in the
matter, assuming you know what mushrooms are safe and which berries are
poisonous is a dumb idea.

So I'm not going to change plant lore to have a minimum of zero, nor to
auto-allow identification for cooking. It's character knowledge not player
knowledge. However, as I was writing this, a compromise has come to me. Keep
your eyes on the channels over the next few days.

Band of explorers gives 5 % plant lore and there are enough items in the game
that you can raise the plant lore to high enough to make (most of) the relevant
dishes.
