The more skilled crossbowmen know the full limits of their weapon, and can take full advantage of their crossbow's draw. By loading more than one bolt at the same time into the channel correctly, they can fire them all simultaneously in a single barrage. Because the bolts are placed so closely together, they all end up striking the same target at the same time. The heavier, more dangerous bolts will often smack into each other in midair, turning into a swirling funnel of razor-sharp shards.
