The staff sling is rather like a small piece of artillery. Used properly, it can hurl heavy items to great distances, where they hail down on their targets with great speed and impact. The staff sling is a little on the clumsy side to use, and can't be used in close combat at all, but the effect more than makes up for these restrictions. Note that, while a 'stone'-type nonweapon item can be used with this skill, 'bullet'-type weapons are far more effective.
