We're not looking forward to opening the website with the old (flawed) combination of various PHP addons and modules at of this point, as we acknowledge that there are more "features" that could be used in a similar type of attack. Thus, we're partly handicapped (in terms of web-presence) due to this general Password Incident, in which a list was published with over 78 000 usernames and password hashes of several Finnish sites (as cited by the Finnish media, Security Companies and web-forums).
BatMUD, The Game is of course up and running, available by Batclient or telnet at batmud.bat.org, as usual.
Our response to the incident was immediate, at the point it came into our knowledge during early Saturday. Sadly, all this is damaging us financially, as Batclient's new (commercially jointly developed) version release has now been postponed due to this incident requiring the available/allocated resources of the Batclient-project. This hurts also the several marketing campaigns that we have running (cost in thousands of euros), but then again, The Game is still here; just somewhat harder to access and find information on.
Meanwhile our website is down, you're welcome to try the latest v1.41 of Batclient, the Official Game Client for BatMUD:
Batclient v1.41 features, screenshots and download-links.
Balanced Alternative Techniques ry,
Update: The National Bureau of Investigation, Finland has made an arrest in the case (link in Finnish).
The board of Balanced Alternative Techniques ry has made a decision of not going to request additional compensation from the offender through the judiciary system of Finland, except for possible court/law enforcement hearing expenses and penalties required by law. While we condemn offensive hacking, this decision is based on the fact that, clearly, this is a young person who would be overburdened in debt in case such additional compensation demands were accepted by a court of law.
Meanwhile, in November 2007 we have gone live with a new web presence.
