From the start I've thought the current gemcutting tune was horrible
and just a bandaid to stop people making lots of money with gem
sales. I can understand why you'd want to limit that, it keeps
people from making relatively easy infinite money. Unfortunately
this tune SEVERELY restricts legitimate uses of gemcutting. Instead of
limiting how many gems you can gemcut per day (I'm talking quality
gems here; perfect, huge, flawless) how about limiting how many you can
sell in shops? Make the number stupid, like total of 10 gems per shop,
of any size/quality, so if someone has cut a bunch of gems for sale
to the general store, they'll at least have to run around to different
places to sell them rather than just visiting the skeep genstore.

This would limit gem sales and the 'free' money, and also allow those
who use the gems in their current mud career to be able to make them
in quantities suitable to what they are doing.

Alternately, open some sort of spa where you can go and pay 20k or
30k or something and have a facial massage to relax that eyestrain
so you can cut some more. While this would just draw money out
of the game for those who are not selling gems for profit, it would
also limit profit made by those who are gemcutting for it.

First option could be abused way too easily. Either merchant could ask friends
to shop his gems or divide selling days. Maybe better option would be just
lower the amount the shops are willing to buy gems. Add some "this gem is made
by merchant" status to gems and make shops check that they wont buy more than
10 of those each boot.
Some spa massage could be nice option also.

I think better way would be to add creator data to gems and make shops
take only 30-50k worth of gems made by one player per day.
That way merchant could sell 10 perfect gems or 100 crappy gems,
but he still makes only 50k per day.
