So. any number of areas have the big issue of being completely or practically
pointless once you've done the single purpose that they have. Finish the area
quest or do whatever you have to do there.

Some coders have managed to pull people back into areas via key harvesting
or tasks that require you to find a specific item.. etc.

So.. areas are seeded with investigatable, harvestable, resources that have
to be found. If you wnat to maket his relatively elaborate.. then certain
groupings are more likely to give certain objects.

This is pretty open.. if you wanted to have it as a specifically merchant
thing, you'd be able to find unearthable clumps of materials. To keep things
fresh, i'd probably suggest a drop table with the odd more intersting item.

If merchants have too many things going for them already, then these areas
could have something that could apply to the whole player base. Off the
top of my head, say archaelogical ruins or things you have to dig up that
will yield things that can be sold to some strange npc. Perhaps if you're
lucky enough, you'll find something that'll point towards an area that
can be investigated.

So follow up..

off the top of my head, have a mob wandering around esiris who will
keep players apprised of any events going on (events related to area
harvesting). They should be over a duration say.. a month or so..

The mob in question has heard that the solstice fair is coming to arelium
but they need wood and steel to build the stands etc for the farmers to
sell their wares.

Areas that have a significant portion in outdoors might yield some of hte
needed goods. If the quotas arent met by the allotted time, the fair passes
arelium by for the next city over.

IF you wanted, events could cycle and have something to do with time of the
year.

Another random concept along the same lines, a mage wants to open a gate
to another realm but needs charged mana-stones which can soak up energy
from mana pools. Only certain areas might have said pool to charge stones
in. Again, if he doesnt get enough stones by the allotted time, the window
to open the gate passes us by.
