I lost 4 cargo holds full of materials because my ship crashed into a
mountain, I typed the words 'cruise home' and before i had time to read the
screen my ship had flown into the mountain and crashed. I lost 10 hrs mining
and lumberjacking, seems to me that the stupid thing would stop if the land is
too high, seems to me that most of the time it does. we should at least be
able to teleport to the teleporter to clean out the ship, i dont care what
rank the navigator is he wouldnt fly into a mountain in 2 leaps!

I haven't flown or crashed myself. However, I'd like to agree with that
crashing while flying but not while saying does appear to be a bit odd.
I can see why, for game play reasons, it would be necesaary to have
ships behave this way and I can also see how it could be explained
away.
However, real ships do get beached or wrecked at sea all the time and
I don't see why unseen sea currents and rocks are somehow more easily
avoidable than a mountain. Navigators stop sailing when the ship can't
sail further, surely they should be capable of stopping flight when a
great huge mountain range is in the way?

Did you ever stop and think that under normal conditions your ship would be
able to fly over said mountains, but during the course of your
sailings, the ship had taken some damage and needed to be repaired?

This could have caused your navigator who would normally fly you over the
mountains to make a bad judgement call and end up flying into them.

Or the fact that u had a ship full of cargo, thus making it "sail" deeper...

A few tips for those of you trying to avoid crashing in mountains:
* If you are barely able to go over mountains, you might want to a) get more
lift magi or b) do 'console height 9;console height locked' (or 8 or whatever
to prevent your ship from being able to traverse mountains at full health).
* If your ship normally can go over mountains but sometimes it takes damage
such that it'll crash, then I'd recommend setting console height to 9
unlocked...when you take damage such that you are about to crash, it'll say
something about moving the height lever to 0...when you see that, get off the
mountains as fast as possible.

I have visited plane wrecks on mountains sides and drunk beer out of the cans
scattered around the hillside.
