I know it's kinda early, but... The Road - movie of the year. Hands down.

I think the fact that I hadn't read the book made me enjoy the film even more.
I had no idea what to expect. I was literally on the edge of my seat every
time they met others or if there was even a remote possibility of that
happening. It's been quite a while since a film managed to keep my heart
beating like mad simply through clever use of heavy atmosphere. Slow (in a
very good way), but almost every single scene had so much tension that I was
just praying for music to start playing to know I'd be "safe" again for a few
moments.

Too bad I had to leave when the credits started rolling. Judging by the
voices, sounds and the little music that I heard, bad stuff was about to
happen.

This year's Cinemare event here in Joensuu was a blast! There aren't a lot of
things that beat watching trashy horror films in the cinema from 9pm to 7am
with hundreds of other people. I watched Martyrs, Häxan, Tokyo Gore Police,
Zombie Flesh Eaters and Robotrix. Apart from Zombie Flesh Eaters, which was a
bit of a let-down, all of them were great either by their horror or comedy
merits. I have to say though that Tokyo Gore Police took the cake:

Cops in Darth Vader costumes + chainsaw duels + emos + rocket jumping +
manic-depressive s&m human-dog cyborg with katanas and machine guns for legs +
engineers as the main enemies + enough blood to replace all the water in the
Atlantic = WIN!

Oh and it also had a gigantic mutated penis cannon! Fun times... :D

game and I must say that it was incredible. I have never ever played any of
the new PoP games so I don't want to comment on the game itself, but wow, was

Such a powerful piece of art. I'm so glad that people with actual artistic
merit are involved in the games industry, some of the stuff they can produce
is absolutely breathtaking. The track by Sigur Ros (I think?) playing the
background is simply drop dead gorgeous and fits the atmosphere of the trailer
like a glove. Just wow. Maybe I'm just really tired right now, but this piece
of animation (if you can even call it one) really moved me. It reminded me of
some of the stuff by Miyazaki. An absolutely sublime audio-visual treat.

My ISP got my connection up a day EARLY. WTF? Did the hell just freeze over?

So, killed Ixixixixiyadayada for the first time. It was a really fun monster
to lead, but somehow I got the idea that it wasn't so exciting for the regular
members! Anyway, the best part of the whole thing was seeing rauskis go
all-caps on blayke for like 5 minutes. Couldn't stop laughing. :)

Then today killed Stifsim for the first time in like 5 years. It has actually
been quite refreshing in a way to go through all this old eq monsters that I
haven't touched in years. Stifsim was really easy (thank you for finally
making the global shitprot a bit more sane!) and despite me fucking things up
in nd, it died pretty fast. No luck with dice though, surprise surprise.

Anyway, gonna be moving tomorrow and won't have ze interwebses for a week or
two. Probably logging on from school every now and then though. After the
break there will be some more monsters to kill, just too bad I'm gonna be
really busy with school too :( Oh well, we'll see what happens.

Yay, killed two mobs I hadn't probably killed once during the last five years
or so. First GMT went down and then later on Skie fell too. Too bad I didn't
get anything from either one, but oh well was still fun to kill them again,

Two Days in Paris was surprisingly good. Falsely advertised as a romantic
comedy, it wasn't in fact romantic at all in the Hollywood sense. Funny it was
though, funny as hell. But the best part was the audience. The theatre was
packed with these 50+ year old women, probably lured in by the false promise
of romcom, and I thought that man there's gonna looots of walkouts here. But
no, surprisingly they totally lolled at the stuff about blowjobs and anal sex,
just like everyone else. Despite the rather raunchy subject matter, the film
never sinked down to the level of American Pies and all that shit, it was in
fact quite tastefully done. I can imagine some more conservative folks having
some issues with this film, though.

The film did slow down a bit towards the end and the ending itself was a tad
bit preachy. But then again, I guess it was needed to wake up all the regular
eejits attempting to live the Hollywood dream of clean, everlasting love bs
over and over again, and then failing miserably every time. In any case it was
a well-done, extremely funny film (Adam Goldberg's uber-neurotic Jack,
especially, was absolutely hilarious) and I'm definitely looking forward to
whatever Julie Delpy chooses to direct next.

well-done Painkiller spoof for those who know the second in-game cinematic.

sounds so fresh.

Merry Christmas and all that business.

I went to the movies for the first time in a while, a proper theatre and all.
Watched I Am Legend with a couple of friends. Funny film, in the final act it
managed to reduce itself from steady mediocrity to the cinematic equivalent of
taking a bath in liquid STUPID. Who funded this film, evangelicals? And if the
idea was to make a christian horror movie, wouldn't it have been easier just
to film the lives of regular people in San Francisco? Or at least replace
zombies with aborted fetuses having gay sex with terrorists. Jebus.

Disclaimer: I am not familiar with the novel the film was based on. Maybe the
stupid religious bs is derived from the source materials. For the sake of the
filmmakers, I really do hope so.

Ok a big ass blog entry right here.

Just finished my last exam this year and luckily I owned it. Had another exam
yesterday which didn't go as well as this one but it was ok anyway. Haven't
been playing that much lately (as other nuns probably have noticed) since I've
been busy with school, but now I only have one essay to do and I'm all done
with school until next year.

Sooooooo, let's see. I went to Cinemare again, which rocked. Saw Hostel 2
(sucked donkey bollocks), Switchblade Sisters (brilliant exploitation flick),
Near Dark (vampire film with great atmosphere and music) and Snake in the
Eagle's Shadow (funny martial arts movie with Jackie Chan). Anyhoo, the event
was much better this year than the last. Although the one before last year's
rocked even more.

Zen, zen, letz zee. Conkker the silly canuck was here for a week. He turned
out to be a nice bloke who beat us in bowling (with a rather eccentric style,
I might add), fainted after sauna, played poker and generally drank way too
much red bull. I wish he could have stayed here longer but the bastage had to
go tease folks in Jyväskylä. Joensuu was happy that he left, though. They had
fireworks going for 20mins as Conquer's train left. \o/

Uh yeah went and killed Tiamat again. This time it was the first incarnation
that was a "bit" of a bitch really. We were faced with instant 5 clones with 3
disintegrate specials a round at best. With the new raise room stuff, it was a
bit too much really. I can tell you with all those incarnations wandering
around, finding a raise room was more than difficult. Things got changed on
the fly, though, and next group there should have a lot more easy, I guess.
The rest went fine, maybe with a hickup or two at the 4th. 5th was a borefest
though, only got to play a silly conjumage which I didn't like at all. Oh yeah
and this time I got the other shield, too.

Oh yeah, just remembered I sort of gave my place to someone so I guess I won't
be playing that much (ie. doing eq) before I get to Jyväskylä for Christmas.

A short but very powerful machinima film with an absolutely brilliant score.
Hands down the best machinima piece I've seen so far, incredibly moving.

Got my ship reputation to level 5 finally, yay!

Last night at 11pm or so I was walking home from the cinema with my friend
after having watched Control (good film btw, R.I.P. Ian Curtis) here at the
Rockumentary film festival. Then we see this oldish man, obviously piss drunk,
trip and fall head first on this slab of concrete, what is is, a bollard? We
were 100% certain the guy was dead, it looked absolutely terrifying the way he
fell on it. But no, when we went there to help him and lifted him up, he was
ok. Still piss drunk and couldn't get anything even remotely understandable
out of his mouth, but he was ok. That guy must have had a guardian angel
watching him or something, we were so sure he was dead. Anyway, we kept him
company for 15mins while waiting for the ambulance. That guy probably has
still no idea whatsoever how close to dying he was last night.

Also watched another documentary on thursday during the Rockumentary film
festival here. It was about Sigur Ros, the Icelandic group with a very orignal
sound. The documentary was called Heima ("at home") and it concentrated on the
free tour around Iceland that Sigur Ros did a while ago. The documentary was
beautifully shot, black and white, maybe with a bit too much trickery with the
images at times, but still breathtaking. The image it painted of Iceland, the
band itself and especially all the regular Icelandic people was amazing. Made
me wish I was Icelandic myself and not stuck here in Finland with all these
fucking junttiäijäs.

Eilen oli X:n näytöksessä ruotsalainen leffa Sano että rakastat mua. Tyly
elokuva. Päähenkilö on teini-ikäinen Fatou, joka raiskataan. Loppuelokuvassa
puidaan sitten tapauksen seurauksia niin Fatoulle itselleen kuin hänen
lähipiirilleen ja toki myös tekijöille. Ehkä aavistuksen mustavalkoinen
elokuva siinä suhteessa kuinka elokuva esitti miehet/naiset, mutta ohjaaja
Daniel Fridellillä riittää onneksi ymmärystä myös rikkoa stereotypioita.
Väkivaltainen äiti ja itse asiassa myös päähenkilö ovat tästä hyviä
esimerkkejä. Toisaalta on myös totta, että suurin osa raiskauksen uhrille
tarjotusta tuesta tulee nimenomaan naisilta, eikä heidän roolia tulekaan
vähätellä. Kaiken kaikkiaan elokuva kuitenkin valotti hienosti sitä
yliseksualisoitunutta maailmaa, jossa nuoriso nykyään elää. Päähenkilöiden
(niin tyttöjen kuin poikien) epätoivoista pätemistä seksikokemuksilla oli
jotenkin surkuhupaisaa seurata. Ja elokuvan kuvaama tilanne ei varmastikaan
ole järin kaukana todellisuudesta, sen huomaa jo täällä intterwebin
batmudissa.

Monessa suhteessa ajatuksia herättävä ja kantaaottava elokuva elokuva,
jollaisia näemmä länsinaapurissa osaa tehdä muutkin kuin Moodysson. Vaikea
kuvitella että tälläistä elokuvaa voisi tehdä Suomessa. Täällä keskitytään
Matteihin ja Ganeseihin. Sano että rakastat mua oli elokuva jonka jokaisen
tulisi nähdä, sukupuoleen katsomatta. Tästä vinkkelistä olikin harmi kun
_harvinaisen_ täyteen pakattu teatteri olikin paria hassua poikkeusta
lukuunottamatta täynnä vain naisia. GG miehet...

I saw Grizzly Man by Werner Herzog the other day. Another great film! It was
at the same time sad and uplifting, tragic and comic. Herzog wasn't afraid to
paint a controversial picture of his main character, Timothy Treadwell.
Treadwell lived with Alaskan grizzlies for 13 summers before getting killed by
one of the bears. Herzog shows us all the positive things about Treadwell and
his work and character, but is not afraid to disagree with him when Treadwell
goes too far.

And above all, the film continued to enforce my idea that the fox is by far
one of the bestestest animals on the planet (though bears are cool too!)

I got to see Lynch's Blue Velvet on the big screen, yay! Films just _need_ to
be seen in the cinema, it makes all the difference in the world.

How the hell do you pronounce Ewige? Man, it's difficult. I don't know. This
was just somethign I thought about whne I was in the toilet k thx bye.

Kävin kattomassa originaaliversion Miyazakin elokuvasta Kikin lähettipalvelu.
Ei ollu ehkä aivan yhtä taianomainen kuin Liikkuva linna ja Prinsessa Mononoke
esmes, mutta silti todellakin taidolla ja sydämellä tehty elokuva.
Humoristisempikin kuin pari aiemmin näkemääni vielä, kertakaikkisen hieno
leffa!

Hävisin dicen!!!

Kävin kattoo Sunshinen. Hyvä ja hieno leffa kyllä, mitä nyt vähän meni oudoks
loppua kohden. Mietin siinä leffan ajan millon se uskonto vs tiede tappelu
tulee siihe mukaa, ja tuliha se lopulta, mut hieman eriskummallisella tavalla
kyllä. 
Alku ja keskivaihe oli kyllä kertakaikkisen hienoa katottavaa. Välillä jopa
todella ahistavaa, paino sanalla todella. Kaverit kyllä joutuu suorittamaan
semmosta tehtävää, että pistää hiljaseks. Epätoivosta menoa. Loppua kohen
mukkaa tulee vaan hieman kauhuelementtiä, joka ei oikeen ehkä tuntunu ainakaan
kertakattomisella sopivan kuvaan, mutta toisaalta kuinka paljon siitäkin
sitten oli totta ja mikä kuviteltua? Jouduttiin pohtimaan aika hardisti pätkän
jälkee.
Mutta Danny Boyle ohjaksissa kyllä hoitaa homman kotia. Kaveri tekee
todellakin omannäköstään leffaa, arvostan todella. 28 päivää myöhemmin oli jo
hieno genrepätkä ja nyt Sunshine jatkaa samalla linjalla scifin suhteen.
Alkupuoli oli hieman pohdinnallisempaa scifiä, mutta loppua kohden homma meni
enempi ja enempi äksöniks, kuitenkin ihan tyylillä. Kliseitäkin oli mukana
mutta nekään ei häiritse kun hyvä ohjaaja osaa välttää pahimmat sudenkuopat
eikä katsojasta tunnu missään vaiheessa että sitä aliarvioidaan.

PS. Cillian Murphyllä on epätodellisen siniset silmät. Vissiin kuitenkin ihan
aidot, kun useammassa pätkässä jo huomannu saman.
PPS. Kiva huomata myös, että tämmöset allekirjottaneen näköset
puoltoistametriset siimakädetkin kelpaa isoihinki rooleihin. Cillian Murphy on
tosin kyllä helvetin hyvännäköinen, mutta joka tapauksessa hienoo että kaveri
senku porskuttaa.

Kävinpä eilen kattomassa Rubikia täällä Jojensuussa Teatteriklubilla. Liikaa
tilaa ei ollu kyllä, mutta ihmeen hyvin sinne lopulta mahtu varmaan toista
sataa immeistä. Bändihän oli loputtoman hyvä. Vaikka mitenkä tarkkaan oli
niiden levy Bad Consciousness Patrol tullut ulkoa opeteltua, niin en kovasta
haistelusta huolimatta spotannu pienintäkään mokaa kun pojat soitti.
Uskomatonta kun ottaa huomioon mitenkä jo pelkästään rytmisesti haastavaa
kavereiden musa on. Ja soittivat kyllä valtavalla fiiliksellä, ei voinu kun
ihailla. Ja laulaja Artturi Taira osaa todellakin laulaa ja sillä on muuten
aika pirun iso suu. Noin niinku ihan kirjaimellisesti siis.

Pojat oli päässy just alottamaan hittibiisinsä City and the Streets, kun
Teatteriklubin palohälyyttimet alotti huutamisen. Olikin muksaa mennä ulos
pakkaseen venailemaan vähissä vaatteissa, että palokunta saapuu paikalle ja
tarkastaa ettei missään pala mikään. Tuli meinaan kylmä. Mutta eipä siinä kun
se 15-20min ja takas jatkamaan, vieläki kovemmalla väännöllä. Bill Withers soi
livenä semmosella raivolla, että vaikkei kappale albumin ihan kovimpia
suosikkeja ole ollutkaan, niin nousi kyllä tuolla Buildingsin, A Hard Tryn ja
The Interventionistin tasolle. Kertakaikkisen mykistävä tykitys.

Ainut mitä harmittelin, oli se ettei yks levyn kovimmista suosikeista Why
Don't You Let It Happen soinut eilen yöllä laisinkaan. Joka tapauksessa
kuitenkin uskomattoman hieno keikka, isot propsit Rubikille. Ja jos kerta
Rubikia niin usein Mewiin vertaillaan niin vertaanpa sitten itekin: jos Mew on
Tanskan paras bändi, niin Rubik on kyllä Suomen. Sanokoot muut mitä tahansa.

Vaalit tuli ja meni, onnea vaan kokoomusväelle! Itteäni harmittaa eritoten se
ettei Cronbergin Tarja päässy täältä Pohjois-Karjalasta, vaikka hirmusen
äänivyöryn saikin. Nooh, pitää luottaa siihen että kokoomuksen riveistäkin
löytyy mukavaa, kunnollista ja lämminhenkistä väkeä, jotka välittää muustakin
kuin omasta navasta, rahasta ja rikkaista. Mutta eiköhän sieltä löydy
sieltäkin!

Viime viikonloppu oli aika kiva. Hyppäsin kaheksan takaperinvolttia trampalta.
Hieman avustettuna tosin, mutta ei liity!

Bought The Bride of Re-Animator during the holidays. It sucked, though. :( I
was expecting the same stuff as in the original Re-Animator which I saw during
the Cinemare festival here. The first Re-Animator completely and totally
owned, I hadn't laughed so hard in ages. It wasn't terryfying at all, but had
all those great b-horror moments and characters. An absolutely spectacular bad
movie... unlike the sequel. It had its moments, but basically it just sucked.
A bad "bad movie", not a good "bad movie" like the first one.

Reincasinpa habotankiks. En ole ikinä(!) näiden 12 pelivuoden aikana ollu
pappitankki, joten oli se aikakin jo. Toivottavasti tästä tulee hyvä! Varmaan
reaverit tulee otettua pappitasojen kaveriks, jännä reincata ilman selvää
suunnitelmaa.

Ja tulipahan todettua että gnollista saa aika epelin kun on kunnon polle alla
ja hyvät kamppeet niskassa. Suosittelen kyllä gnolli bmasteria kaikille expon
nälkäsille, taisin vajaan 50m tahkota sillä.

Saw the new Bond last night. My first ever Bond-movie in the theatre! It was
good, even better than I expected. Daniel Craig was awesome! Very rough around
the edges, which was great. While you could still see the film was a
bond-flick, it had none of the superhero antics of the past few bonds. There
still was some really over the top action, but the general tone and atmosphere
was much more down to earth and even realistic, lots of low key stuff. I loved
it. Some good humour in it, too! Even the Bond-girl was far from the regular
fare in these films. And I loved the way Bond ditched that one girl once he
got the needed information out of her, nice "upside down"-touch.

Some of the score was wayyy too melodramatic and spoiled certain scenes, but
still Casino Royale was the best Bond I've ever seen. Definitely recommended!

Oh yeah. What they did to the Bond-franchise with this new entry reminded me
of what Nolan did to the Batman franchise with Batman Begins. A much darker,
more mature film. I really hope this sort of trend catches on. We have enough
kiddie stuff thrown at us already.

Yay, I got my Unrated Director's Edition of Miami Vice! Wish I just had time
to watch it too. Took about a week for it to arrive from Singapore, pretty
nice! GG cd-wow.fi and thanks to Capula for recommending the place for me.

Otettii Roudan kans crittikisa, jonka se vei kyllä aika tylysti 6-15 tms.

normicritit, shrug. Ainakin wepat heftaa hyvin ja find weaknessit sun muut on,
en tiiä miks sarvi crittaa 100 ja miekat 0 :(

Kävin cinemaressa nyt viime viikonloppuna. Katoin Carnival of Soulsin,
Wickermanin, Snuff movien ja Maniacin. Kaikki muut oli enempi tai vähempi
scheissee, mutta Wickerman rokkas. Sen tosin tiesin jo entuudestaan, kun olin
pätkän nähny jo. Tietty leffassa se oli vielä 2x kovempi. Seuraavana päivänä
kävin vielä cinemaren jatkoilla montussa kattoo suomalaisen kauhuleffan
Succubuksen (järjettömän paska) ja uudemman jenkkipätkän Call of Cthulhu
(vitun kova).

5) Hmm... Silent Hill by Christophe Gans. I guess you could argue
it wasn't "good" in the traditional sense, but it sure was hellish to say the
least and it stayed with me. Been having nightmares of some of the stuff
there, so it definitely deserves a mention. The biggest surprise of the year.

So that was 2006. Let's see what the next year brings. Until then I'll
probably go and see the new Bond film, hopefully it'll entertain the hell out
of me because so far I've never(!) seen a Bond film in a theatre.

Went and saw The Departed last night. Had high expectations due to rave
reviews and the fact that it's Scorcese with crime/mob stuff again.

Well, I was dissapointed. :( Sure, the flick was good, but I just got so numb
with all the violence, cursing and killing towards the end. The first hour was
amazing. Some of the characters were great, some were just funny and others
pure evil. But as the plot advanced, I felt it didn't leave much room for the
characters any more.

But yeah, it was a plot movie mainly anyway. Even so, the plot seemed
contrived towards the end. All the twists and killings (how many
point-blank-range killings can you have within 5minutes, really?) made it feel
grotesque and even ridiculous to some extent. There was even laughter from the
audience, which is something I absolutely fucking loathe. It surely lessened
my enjoyment. Fucking idiots.

There was some great dialogue in the film. But once again, towards the end all
the cursing and "homo this, homo that" got a bit annoying. I don't mind "fuck"
in certain types of films, like Tarantino's stuff and something like Boondock
Saints, but I got the idea Scorcese went for a "serious" sort of movie with
The Departed, and frankly, it was just a bit too much. It made it cartoonish.
But then again I'm not a police officed/fbi guy in Boston, so what the hell do
I know? Maybe it's really like that.

Most of the performances were great. Absolutely loved Mark Wahlberg's shithead
character (well except for the very end). Matt Damon was solid and Leo di
Caprio showed a side I hadn't seen him do before. However, in the end it all
came down to just anger, rage, rinse, repeat, stuff so it took something away
from their performances. Nicholson was good. Sheen was good. Even Baldwin was
good!

One great scene with Leo and Matt phoning each other and not saying anything.
LOVED that scene! Also loved the political undertone in the first hour or so,
after that it got lost. The scene with the Indian shopkeeper and the mafiosos
was brilliant. "Stop! Stop!! What is wrong with this country? Everyone is
hating everyone!" So true.

We've had this little "contest" with a friend of mine. Marty Scorcese and
Michael Mann are both our favourites, and they have both often released movies
during the same year. So we've been watching their stuff and kept a record who
has won. At least 1999, 2004 and now 2006 they've both released films, and we
believe it's 3-0 for Mann right now. 1999 Mann took the crown with The Insider
and in 2004 with Collateral, both superior to Martin's achievements. This year
was gonna be exciting because both were releasing crime stuff AND updated
versions of old stuff (Tv-series and a Hong-Kong film) so the ground was
pretty much even. However, even with a faulty version according to Mann (a
much altered dc is coming in Dec) he still takes the crown with Vice. Does
this mean Marty should be considered a past greatness? Hell no. While The
Departed is far from his best works, he once again shows he still has a few
tricks up his sleeve and knows how to direct a solid film. The Departed is a
good film with a GREAT first hour, but with the last 1.5h dragging the overall
result down somewhat. Recommended anyway.

tämmönen gnolli vie 100-0 99% tän pelin offuista. Noh, hajotkoon aamuihinsa
kaveri. :)

Meni järki mageiluun. Satatuhatta magee, ei partyja, vaikka olin loppua kohen
jo ihan hyvä!

Noh, sit tämmönen perusvitutusreincci, eli gnolliks. Huomenna itken sit, et
miks helvetissä tein tän, miks, miks!!

It's me birthday, yay!! With a quarter of a century behind me now, my wisdom

Boards of Canada - Skyliner

Absolutely the bestestest track BoC has put out in years, and that's saying a
lot! 100% feelgood track, can't stop smiling when I'm listening to this.
Especially those really boc-style high notes, the tiny little melody, just
makes me SMILE!!! It's like a little kid, smiling and waving at you, how can
you not smile back? Makes me feel like a kid again, too. Amazing! Also love
the rhythm. It's got this lovely, lazy hiphop beat that is at the same time
slow and incredibly complex. Some serious badass drum programming there. And
the basedrum is so goddamn low/deep it would make even the amikset weep.
Took me a few listens to really get into, but I'm absolutely loving it now.

Also on the same EP (Trans Canada Highway) is another great track - Under the
Coke Sign. Very much like Olson from Music Has the Right to Children,
featuring those slightly offkey synth chords that make Boards of Canada have
such a unique sound. Only about 1.5mins long, this little track is still one
of my boc favourites ever. Left Side Drive is the other new long track on the
EP. It's also great, but much darker/brooding than the rest of the material.

Watched Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981) the other night. I bought it
for 7e or so from Anttila a couple of weeks ago but hadn't had the time to
watch it. It was just one of those impulses, I had seen it like 10 years ago
and had this idea that it was a pretty good flick, so I just decided to pick
it up.

Boy, was I NOT dissapointed! It fucking rocked! :) Definitely a winner for
anyone who likes the sort of scifisque/madmaxlike stuff. Kurt Russell was a
real badass once again, too. :)

And the ending! Man, I'm still laughing as I think about it. I totally did not
see it coming, I was like "ah ok, this was it"... "no, wait it wasn't
haha!"... "OWNED!!!"

Olin just surkeimmassa hbm-partyssa ikinä. Piti ihan luovuttaa kun pojat otti
nii pahasti silmää. :(

Mut ihan kiva kokemus silti!

Ok since I know everyone's just dying to hear what I've been listening to
lately I'll let you know: 

Mogwai - Auto Rock
This absolutely gorgeously melancholic art rock(or whatever!) tune was
perfectly used in the finale of Miami Vice. Just simply breathtaking,
beautiful piano lines combined with warm guitars/electronics.

Phoenix - Too Young
The french pop/rock group Phoenix was first introduced to me through the film
Lost in Translation. Maybe a bit too much on the artsy side for some, but
nevertheless a great pop track in the vein of Air/Mew/BoC.

The Killers - When You Were Young
I heard this straightforward poprock song on the radio a while ago and was
hooked immediately. A true feelgood track with a hint of melancholy in it
(yeah, I'm not big on paradoxes anyway). I've been having serious troubles
getting this song out of my head today. Fucking brilliant, strings for the
win!

Moreod cloak, Jane boots ja Moreod parry belt. Harvinaista herkkua...

Yeah about Miami Vice. Lately I haven't had much time to write about the film
as I was supposed to, but now I do, so here goes. I just visited imdb and
checked out what people thought about it and well... it was "WORST MOVIE
EVAR!!1!"-show all over again.

Seems like a lot of people were put off by the film. In a way I can understand
this, because many were expecting either a) a 80s comedic warmup ala Starsky &
Hutch, or b) a silly Bad Boys-style actioner with one liners and explosions.

Come on!!! It's Michael fucking Mann here! The guy does his own thing, he
doesn't seem to give a flying beep about studios and whatnot. Who else has the
balls to have no opening credit sequence in a $140m production? No, we the
audience get Mann's forte once again: an intense, no-bullshit crime piece.
This time we're on the side of the police, though, but as usual, it's a thin
red line between cops and crooks in Mann's flicks.

The plot itself is pretty straigthfoward. Our guys Crockett and Tubbs need to
go even deeper undercover to find a mole. Or that's how it starts anyway. The
plot is delivered in a typical Mann fashion: lots of police jargon, talk, more
talk, more police jargon, a nice set action piece, talk, police jargon, even
more talk, and so on. People with short attention span: you're not gonna like
this, watch something else.

The dialogue is mostly good. Some really meaty lines, real gems "It's a
question! You know, question!", the usual badass/macho bullshit talk, a lot of
jargon, a couple of poor lines, more great lines, and so on. Anyway, mostly
very good. In a few cases I was left thinking if Mann was trying a bit
too hard with the dialogue, but there's nothing cringeworthy. Even the couple
of corny lines are saved by the actors' performances.

Yeah the actors... I haven't seen a lot of Colin Farrell's stuff, but the guy
proves here (along with The New World by Malick) that under a talented
director he can ace it. Like with Tom Cruise/Vincent in Collateral, Farrel is
not playing Crockett, he fucking IS Crockett. The way he unloads on agent
Fujima for fucking things up, the empty stare in his eyes in the shower when
Isabella is looking, the sad/tender looks when she IS looking, all the small,
subtle mannerisms like snorting when expecting a fire fight, slight nods to
people, even slighter smiles, everything! There's so much in his performance
if you just pay some attention.

Jamie Foxx (Tubbs) is mostly good. He has some downers, but mostly he's solid.
Nothing absolutely spectacular, but still solid. Some great moments, too, like
his show in the hospital towards the end, VERY convincing. Also loved the way
he gives Alonzo the bad news: "You don't... you don't need to go home any
more". The whole scene is something you just don't get very often, goddamn
moving. And the end of that scene - brilliance! The way Mann abruptly cuts
from the passing truck/blood trail to Crockett&Tubbs crusing down in their
Ferrari to meet Fujima - enter another great scene.


The rest of the cast is absolutely spot on, too. Both the informants, Alonzo
and Nicholas, are played by people I hadn't heard of before but they both fit
their roles absolutely 100%. Crockett&Tubbs' crew is cast well, especially
loved the cold, no-bullshit portrayal of Gina by Elizabeth Rodriguez even if
she isn't given a lot to work with in the film. She also has the most
macho/ultramasculine lines in the whole movie! She delivers them in such a
fashion that you're left with absolutely no doubt she could pull the shit off,
too!


Ciaran Hinds aces agent Fujima. One of the best scenes in the film involves
Fujima getting verbally owned by Castillo (whose "Cool down!" would shut up a
football stadium during the world cup final) and realizing it, he just mumbles
"alright", turns away, completely empty and lost, and leaves. Left me with a
big smile on my face! Another nod goes off to the druglord duo played by a
sleazy John Ortiz and a menacing Luis Tosar. Both fit 100%. There isn't much
humour in the film at all, but whenever Ortiz was on, I couldn't stop smiling.
And I still start to laugh when I just imagine his "I'm a disco guy" feat. :D

So like I said, not much humour in the flick. Some Foxx antics, but mostly
very subtle. A lot of visual cues to make cinephile nerds like me smile. A
couple of way-too-badass lines to either put you off or make you smile, I'm in
the latter group. But yeah, the atmosphere of the film is dark, tense,
no-bullshit.

The cinematography fits this mood down to the last detail, and simply put: is
stunning. Just stunning. I know some people disagree with Mann using HD
instead of film (as it's a bit grainy compared to film), BUT this adds to the
hyper-real feel of the movie. Someone said that Michael Mann is realer than
real, and I gotta agree. The film does not seem like Hollywood film but more
like a documentary, and this is not just because of the cinematography.
Everything, down to the last detail, is spot-on. I don't mind the grain, when
I can fucking see into the night! The clouds in the background, the dimly lit
parking lots, boats in the middle of the ocean at night... man, just gorgeous!
Impossible with film I say.

So there's a lot of talk yeah, but a Mann flick is not a Mann flick without
the action set-pieces. A definite high-light in this film is the trailer park
scene. Our guys storm a trailer park in search of a team member and what
happens is something that left the whole theatre I was in gasping for air.
Everything is perfect in the scene - perfect build up, some hc tension
stand-off and when the shit hits the fan, it really fucking hits the fan. Took
me a while to recover from that scene, I can tell you that.

There are some other set-pieces worth mentioning as well, but I'll just touch
upon the 5-10min long final shoot out here. That fight is pure 100% chaos, but
then again I'd think that's how it tends to be in reality. I loved the sound
in this scene. Loved it to bits. I could just listen to the scene, no image,
just listen, it was so well done. A nice touch was the way the gunfire was
muffled in the ears of Crockett&Tubbs, as if they were so used to that kind of
shit going on it didn't even matter any more. The questions I had about the
fire fight after the first viewing were answered during the second and third,
there's A LOT in the details, you just tend to miss it in the chaos.

The use of music is very important to Mann, and here he once again proves his
ability. His picks set the mood whenever necessary, and once again the ending
is spectacular. He uses Mogwai's Auto Rock while giving us parallel shots of
of Crockett letting Isabelle go and Tubbs sitting beside Trudy in the
hospital, recovering. The ending might be a cliche (the end of a relationship
vs recovery of one), but the way Mann pulls it off just brings a tear in your
eye. AND THE HANDSHAKE IS THERE! That was what finally did it for me, Tubbs
and Trudy holding each others hands while Crockett watches Isabelle go. I've
seen it three times now and despite the cliche my eyes haven't been dry once.
Fucking ace.

There are some downers too, no doubt about that. Some of the lines, some of
the scenes, even some of the music, but they're all minor gripes. I would have
wanted to elaborate on the flaws, but seems like I'm gonna run out of space
(max 150 lines). Anyway, there still so much good stuff in the film, it may be
subtle but it is there. Watch it. Watch it again. Notice more stuff. Notice
even more stuff.

Miami Vice is not Michael Mann's best, but it's still a solid film. It's a
rare treat these days, when most films tend to be advertisements for toys and
other by-products. R-rated film that definitely needs to be R-rated, a crime
piece for the adult audience.

PS. Oh yeah, for you, the MV purists. Miami Vice the TV show was about being
on the edge of what is cool, was it pop music or clothing or setting or crooks
getting away and so on. Miami Vice the film is exactly the same thing: the 80s
is GONE, we have today's music (Mogwai, Audioslave etc), today's setting,
today's realism, today's cutting edge. So here's my official "fuck you" to you
for whining about not having a lame 80s rehash.

Seems like Michael Mann is unable to end a film without two people holding
hands. Once again it works great, this time with it was a bit different take
on the trademark, but nevertheless it works out perfectly yet again. I'll try
to write something more about the film later - I'm still recovering from the,
eh... shock and awe. :)

Gnnnnn. The last two mobs of round 12 left, had had no problems whatsoever
till then, but: BOOM! AMBUSH! ENERGY dcrit acid ray + double crit -> instant

Niinjoo, tuli toi hl2 episode 1 pelattua kanssa läpi. Aika helmee menoo
paikoittain! Putkijuoksu kyllä hieman tökki välillä, mut oli se silti niin

nyt, ku niille on tullu noi pikkukvestit. Bladed furykin tuntus kivalta
taidolta taas, ainaki verrattuna noihi noppasiin cleaveihin ja slasheihin.
Vielä tommone 5m+ expoa skilleihi nii vois alkaa taas levelaa, ja tapittaa noi
rangerit vaikkasta alkuun.

Oh well, tulipahan käytyä toistamiseen tähä mennessä häviämässä Tiamatille.
Aika huonon säkän reissu kyllä, pakko sanoa. Ensin jouduttii alotusta venailee

Just spent a bit over a week away from Joensuu. First a couple days in Kuopio
and even went to Puijon Kisat to watch some skijumping! Then to Helsinki,
where I did some shopping and went to see Mew at the House of Culture.

The concert was no doubt one of the most incredible experiences in my life.
Man, can Jonas Bjerre sing or what! Simply Amazing. The background images that
they used during the gig were breathtaking, the silhouettes of birds flying
against a red sky as Chinaberry Tree ended really made me speechless... and
that was only the beginning!

After coming back to Joensuu I have been a bit sick for a couple of days, but
now it's getting better again. Heading to Jyväskylä this weekend for my
sister's birthday. Also gonna meet some friends so I'm looking forward to a
great weekend once again!

asti keskinkertaisuutena pitämästäni Colin Farrellista. :)

Tänää taisteltiin lohikiärmeksen kanssa ja voitokkaastiki jopa ihan. Olin 
ennen dicee 100% varma voitosta, ku olin kevyesti partin paskin memberiki -

No en mä nyt iha kaikkia vihaa, suurinta osaa vaan. :) Ja vihaki on tietty

VITUN LUJAA NE ON MISSÄKIN AJANU JA KUIN VITUN MONESTI NIILLÄ ON KORTTI
LÄHTENY ja kuinka niiden kaverit on päässy poliiseja karkuun ja missä ne on
