Sadly I think in some respects Qurp is right. Lord Acton had it right when he
said that "power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely" (and no it
wasn't George Orwell who said this). When the Soviet Union was around there
was a certain amount of check to power and no one was the top dog and although
things were tense, they had a certain stability. Now things are very unstable,
and the top dog (at least from a military and I guess as would go hand-in-hand
with this, an economic stand-point) can dictate policy around the world. This
is unfortunate in some respects because Americans have not had the time to
develop the historical wisdom to do so. It is almost like everyone rooting for
their favorite sports team to go in and kick ass over the opponent, only its
countries and not sports teams. I hope America and Americans will take a step
back in really assess where this is leading to and the potential instabilities
it is going to create.
My two cents.
