Ok, this is a bit more calmed down version of my discussion on the newbie
channel. First off, I help them for purely selfish reasons. Without a
constantly expanding playerbase, BatMUD will die. Newbies are necessary to
ensure the survival of the game. Older players retire. It's a fact of life.
If you're on here long enough, and type friends -l, it almost gets depressing
when you see how many of your older friends no longer play. And the entropy
will continue. Newbies bring new life to the game. Yes, sometimes,
frequently even, they ask stupid questions, or whine, or are obnoxious. BUT,
I stand by the idea that without them, Bat will slowly start dying. MUDding
as a rule is already dying. We're being replaced by EverQuest and other
constantly evolving games with graphics. I don't want to see Bat turn in to a
game with a few active players, a lot of retired ones, and no one new. I'm
not asking everyone to help newbies. What I'm asking for is for people to sit
back and consider what life without bat would be like. Most of us are
addicted, and most of us admit it. But if our player base stops expanding, we
will stagnant, and eventually die. No, not right away, it would probably take
a few years, as a matter of fact. But it will happen. Please consider this
next time a newbie does something ignorant, or asks a question (we consider)
stupid.
