Glaurungs post was an excellent idea. While at it here's some ideas from the
same category
remove backgrounds altogether.
add restrictions "Race must be one of the following..." "Not a member in
guilds ..." and "Alignment must be ..." to guilds instead.

I do not think limiting guilds to certain races is a god idea whatsoever. Why
should one be prevented from making Troll mage if he/she wants to? and
besides, "Not a member of guilds ..." is absolutely equal to the background
mechanism as of now. Recoding the same?

That's just my 2 cents, of course, who am I to judge.
