Perhaps _new_ players should get some advice when selecting
races/backgrounds when starting.

It would probably help us keep more new players, we've all seen those
horrible combinations people come up with.

whatever, considering the race.
Since we got newbie helpers that are dedicated for the job, would
it be a terrible idea to ask from a new player when he/she enters,
that would you like some help from an experienced player to aid you
on your choices, and if he/she wants to, all newbiehelpers get a message
XYZ wants assistance on choosing...
or something like that.

Hi,

Just to inform that many newbie have tryed just that elf mage at start because
mages will eventually get biggest damage. They just do not get how long it
will take in here and that they will not get those hitpoints. People who even
start to play muds are normally quite presistent so they will stick to
whatever they have choose altought someone more experienced tells them that it
will not work out as they think.

So starting choises are very much reflections of previous games the newbies
have played. I also did the same, I started with drow mage and did not belive
when people told me that ranger would be much easier.
The point is that altought we tell newbies that your combo is not really
suitable thaty will answer 'I want to test this out'.

yeah, that's very true. but i also think that some players (let's say 50%) are
like me in that they like to read a manual or somekind of helpfile to clear
things up in their heads before they seriously get into a game. my first 2-3
characters got fucked up because i made wrong choices and didn't even know
about reincarnation. but that's just my opinion of course
