Perhaps _new_ players should get some advice when selecting
races/backgrounds when starting.

It would probably help us keep more new players, we've all seen those
horrible combinations people come up with.

"This race is best suitable for $blah, or perhaps $blah2" $blah being
whatever, considering the race.
Since we got newbie helpers that are dedicated for the job, would
it be a terrible idea to ask from a new player when he/she enters,
that would you like some help from an experienced player to aid you
on your choices, and if he/she wants to, all newbiehelpers get a message
XYZ wants assistance on choosing...
or something like that.

There's a couple of issues with that.. Let's say XYZ needs assistance in
choosing. Then every available helper barges in and the poor player gets
flooded by tells, and sometimes conflicting advice. It doesn't really take
much time to code a few lines of text into character creation, and i really
believe that it'll make things much clearer for newbies, or at least the first
steps much easier.
This is just my two euro cents, but since there already is brief explanation
of races, backgrounds and suitable races for backgrounds (yeah right) in
place...
Do we really need more text to tell newbies they should make giant ranger or
elf tarmalen? If someone can find fun in playing something that's not the
minmaxers perfect choise, why is that so bad?

Because lots of them say "batmud sucks" and then leave because thrikhren
barbarian is a sucky combination and they played something that worked in EQ2
where a healer solo's as well as a Tank, and a Mage, and a Scout? (And yes we
need people to play this game we can't say "if they are too lazy fuck them")
Atleast give people a chance who might not be tough skinned, to grow some.
