Let\'s take a minute to imagine a not-so-prosperous country somewhere in
Africa. People live there sort of happily, never mind the occasional famine
and various problems caused by unstabile and corrupted government(s).
Then one day, suddenly or not, the country collapses to anarchy / civil war.
Everyone with half a brain wants to get hell out of there, while the others go
on killing, looting and raping. In practice, certain groups of people have
different possibilities available to them:
1. The average countryside folk either stays home and gets raped, looted and
killed or tries to flee to a neighbouring country, hoping to reach a refugee
camp or something there. They don\'t have money or other means for anything
else. We see glimpes of these people in news footage from refugee camps.
2. A wealthy family will grab whatever they can carry, and if they have enough
cash they might be able to bribe enough people, get out of the country, and
purchase plane tickets to somewhere as far as possible, even if it is a remote
country far north nobody has ever heard of.
What do these people do when they manage to get a refugee status and settle in
the new country? They will try the best they can to build their lives again,
live comfortably, get nice clothes for the children, perhaps a car if they can
afford it, etc. normal middle class stuff. They might have the social skills or
brain to get a job or negotiate a little extra cash out of the welfare system.
These people infuriate certain locals because of their \"welfare
funded\" lifestyle.
3. One additional group of interest consists mostly of young, able bodied
males with no money but some other means. They will use whatever brawn, brain
and connections they might have to get out. It might involve walking over
deserts or perhaps selling drugs and weapons or robbing and killing fellow
citicens until they manage to get out. Not all of these
individuals have any experience of living peacefully in a normal society
and thus after settling in a new country some of them might continue with
their old ways of violence and petty crimes.
This little scenario, perhaps simplified and imaginative, might help to
explain certain aspects of the refugee and immigrant related phenomena
discussed here lately.
