From the way you describe the reasons for not using batclient I see that you
really haven't even taken a good look at it. The client can be customized to
be just like a good old TF, no map windows and anything. AND you can then add
that hp-status on top of that, how does that sound?
Honestly, the main reason for people not using batclient, as I see it, is the
old farts' reluctance to change and find out new possibilities, YOU included.
It's just that when you see something done different from what you've been
used to you consider it as a bad thing and don't give it much more thought.
And pardon my french, this wasn't meant to flame any single person but all of
you who have the balls to admit you fit the definition of a 'reluctant old
fart' (you still fall in even if you don't admit it).
Honestly, the main reasons for me to not to use Batclient are:
1) it's written in Java
2) it's a GUI application
3) it's written in Java
Yes, feel free to point out how stubborn old fart I am, and how I am not
"wanting" to find out "new possibilities". I think Batclient is great, it's
certainly a good thing, but it is NOT something for me. Using Batclient would
cramp my style, to put it short'n'simple.
I certainly could rant longer about the reasons why I'm not going to give
Batclient a try, and perhaps make it not sound so trollish, but what would be
the point? The point of this discussion up till this far was that giving any
"unfair" benefits to users of Batclient would be detrimental. I am, of course,
making the _assumption_ that B.A.T. ry and administration of BatMUD does NOT
require the players to use Batclient. If this assumption is incorrect, it
should be pointed out in the documentation, and perhaps enforced on protocol
level (I know that there is a certain 'extension' you use in the telnet
protocol to detect when Batclient is being used).
But if my assumption is correct, players should be able to use whatever client
they please, and users of Batclient should only receive benefits that are
either a) available to others too, or b) things that do not affect player/game
balance.
Just my two stumps of a carrot.
