I agree...I think we went through this before...one event = fun. 2 events =
less fun. 3 events = no fun. 4 events = fuck you. I know, at the slow time of
day when we want more players to play, lets FUCK THEM ALL. It's a perfect
example of reverse psychology. If the players want to have fun, lets fuck them
up the ass, and show them that fun is overrated. Clones? check. Eater? which
one...let's do both. Demons? check. Perhaps it will teach the mudders how much
fun they COULD HAVE BEEN HAVING.

People, stop whining so much. Clones, eaters, demons. Why noone is whining
about the TP rain that went off just before that? I somehow see noone
mentioning it. Newbies this newbies that. Most of the events are auto-ran
these days, remember how much whine it caused when we finally fixed it. And
then, even if I ran a few fuckup events at the same time, there were about 100
unidle players. So hard to kill magic eater with 100 people? Besides, hasn't
magic eater been tuned to affect only one continent?

The reason nobody is whining about that TP rain is because only a handful of
people ever knew it was ran.
TP rain is usually over when the first player sets eyes on a tp lying around,
and then that player grabs the most of those.

This mud is incredibly flowery these days. I'm surprised that magic eater
doesn't rain down teddybears. Still some people have the fucking nerve to
whine. Sad. Weak. Die.

My own thoughts on the subject is Balance = The shit.

I would like to make a sad, weak analogy to cars at this points. We all know it
was great that cars had fins and stuff back in 50\'s. Later on these have
disappeared from new cars. Back then cars did not have things that are now
considered as basic things. Things have gone far and anything that actually
make you feel more comfortable are \"in\".

We all know (or atleast SHOULD know) that driving 60\'s Ford Mustang is far
from gratifying on drivers side when it goes down to actual driving, it is a
fucking ship that you are trying to get through a needle. These days cars are
nice and easy and you just enjoy the ride.

Guess what, same happened to games. People like to be in comfortable
environment. There is challenge, but maybe different kind. To think of it,
when i started major part of the challenge with batmud was the damned links,
constant crashes, other such things. Those were so bad to the extent we would
not have even noticed the hardness of events, really.

Bah, there is no point to this rambling. Point was to be that world changed,
you ought to have changed too, but to what direction. People who were hardcore
players and basically the only players 10-15 years ago are these days a
minority, a natural resource that is dying out or just becoming cynical, cold
and remote to anything.

I wonder how many of those days players are actually playing these days? Is
this game for those players that do not actually play anymore? Should we
change focus? (Glad we have changed focus here to \"softer\" way. I would like
to emphasize that BatMUD has a lot to give to players, but maybe, just maybe it
should be considered that harsh events, harsh and down right hostile
environment might not actually mean challenge but repulsion.

Well, most events are auto-run these days, and run at quite nice intervals.
Even the "this hurts players" things are reasonable as well. BUT, yesterday
they all were run at same time. Why didn't we complain about tp-rain? Well, I
didn't see newbies whining about it because they didn't even know it was
there, and if they had, they wouldn't have benefited from it. Why not run tp
rain inside pleasantville? Because clones sure made pleasantville unplayable
for a bit because highbies cant even get in there to help take care of the
clones...and what's a lvl 1 guy going to do while trying to learn how to use
kick and his clone rapes him?

Boohoo, this is a flower mud. Face it, 10 years ago, there wasnt much
competition in the online multiplayer game area. Bat could be like "fuck you
players, we know you'll be back". Now, it's like "fuck you players, go to WoW"
or whatever. I disagree with tarken, this isn't a "dying mud", we've been
getting quite a few new players these days, but we need to be more careful to
keep them. We've gone a long way towards making it nicer, with newbie helpers
and rules for newbie channel...but lets let them get hooked before we do this
to them?

To Ooga's Fuck you go to WoW. Well, think about it this way. In WoW you don't
have fuck up events every friday (although we don't either, but let's assume
those fuckups happen EVERY friday), in WoW you have horde camping you every
day, every time. And still, players tend to cope with it - it's a part of the
game. If you want to swim in a piece of cake all the time... well. Why don't
we implement "bomb" command that will kill monsters on the spot and then you
can just loot them? Some bad things are part of the game, and sometimes bad
things happen at once. Well, so? Where's your gaming spirit. Even with 39
players (as Tarken said, however i checked the number of unidle players before
running events and it was close to 100, rather than 40) you can still get a
decent party and go kill the eater. With all those flowery things as party
linking, etc, you can down the eater even with a bunch of 20 lvl 50 players. I
understand your concern about making newbie happy, but well... The only thing
I can think of right now is the same way other MMOs approach this - make
newbie areas unaffected by any events, and make those newbie areas bigger, to
let people actually learn the game inside those. Like make a few areas in
pleasantville, make pleasantville a "suburb" with surroundings that will be
unaffected by events, shoot it on a separate small continent, where people
would only get effects of beneficial events, etc. But a few challenges for 3x
reborn guys who are boring their butts off raping smurfs - I see no harm in
that.

Hmm, sorry for the "Wall of text hits you." :)

Yes, those MMOs have their own frustrations that go with them, I don't think
there's anybody who would disagree. BUT my point was that muds have
competition now. They didn't have that 15 years ago, or even 10 years ago.

Yes, you checked unidle players before events and it may have been 100...but
AFTER them, it was less than 40. You do the math, did players enjoy them?

You commented that players whine when you run 5 bad events, but don't when you
run 5 good...well, that's pretty straightforward...if you get a bill for $5000
in the mail, you'd whine, but would you whine if you got a check for $5000
instead? Doubtful. It's human nature. But, if the cost for the mega-positive
events is that we also get mega-negative events, I'd like to decline that
deal. Most of the positive events have relatively little benefit to the play
enjoyment, sure they are nice, etc, but the convergence of them doesn't make
my play day into an epiphany of happiness like the mega-negative ones makes my
day into a pit-of-unhappiness. The sense I'm getting from this is that you
want to awe us mortals with your raw might and power to benefit us or penalize
us at your whim. Well, consider the majority of us to be awed. I will point
out that it's quite a different reaction than respect or like.

Sorry to say, but you take this game too seriously. Absolutely. Whine all you
wish. This is game, no this ain\'t your salary, no this ain\'t your life.

This is game. And I have always find the hardships of this game to be the best
part of this game. I find this game to be flowermud, this game has been
changed so much easier than it was days I started. It has also killed my
interest as this isn\'t so much a challenge, it\'s nice that it has a
something interesting once a while, you want it easier? Whine and die.

Okay. I think that something is simply broken in the auto-loader for events.
Here it is, Saturday, and FIVE events just fired off inside of one minute.
Lucky us, today they are Exp Lottery, TP Lottery, TP Sheep, Sharon, and
Rainbow. I\'m sure many people are thrilled with this confluence. I think
it\'s another example of the auto-run code favoring clusters of events when it
should try to avoid event clusters.
