When I saw that post, I was thinking to myself "No way they will have an
option for how I found bat." And sure enough, when I looked at the site, it
wasn't there! Then, I noticed that there was a scrollbar, and just off the
bottom of the screen, I saw 'Gopher (for Tomba)' in there...and that was it.
I remember I convinced my parents that a net connection would be very
educational, so they got me a unix shell account with netcom (an ISP in the
US, I don't think it's around any more). Well, the first thing I did was look
for a way to find some online games or some such (I was in 7th or so grade). I
had been hearing some friends talk about Dungeons and Dragons, and I had no
clue what it was, but it sounded fun, so I opened up gopher, and searched for
'Dungeons and Dragons'. Well, I didnt find anything like that, but I found a
category for 'Multiple User Dungeons'. When I checked that out, there were
several options. How did I pick bat out of the list? I went down the list
alphabetically, and bat was the first one that was up at the time.
The moral of the story? To get more people to play batmud, we need to make
sure the gopher indexes are current.
