Are you aware of food for oil program? Its something that the UN created to
help iraq with the embargo. Basically it allowed Iraq to sell some small
percentage of oil for cash to be used for medicine and food. Guess where that
money went? Into first, rebuilding Iraqs military infrastructure with a
particular emphasis into developing missile technology and anti-aircraft
defenses, and also into building something like 11 or 12 new "presidential
palaces" at the cost of billions to the iraqi state. While teh iraqi people
starve and cant obtain adequate medical services saddam and his generals live
like kings in sprawling hundred -acre pleasure resorts ....could this money
have been better spent on perhaps what it was inteded for? Humanitarian aid?
You answer that question.
Your last line of argument is that Iraq is incapable of being run without a
brutal and savage central goverment that represses its people (which;seems to
undercut your first argument). As evidence you put out the facts of iraqi
national makeup. Well this is a horrible generalization. Saying all Sunnis
follow a sunni leader, all shias follow the PRIME ONE shia in Iran, etc, is
not a realistic attitude. Actually, Iraq has a highly educated middle class
that is quite moderate in relation to other arab states. This middle class
cuts through the shia, sunni,kurdish ethnic borders and is a homogonizing
force in Iraq. It also makes iraq a prime candidate for democracy (and its
why Saddam has to keep his police force working overtime,;because educated
peoples long for one thing: freedom). IF (and this is;a big if) a democracy is
formed in Iraq, I am quite certain that like the one in Afganistan it will be
bipartisan and attempt to draw strength from differences. May it fail?
Possibly. But saying it cannot succeed is fatalistic, and just plain wrong.
