Sunday Situation: According to the Russian intelligence service information,
the situation on the fronts was as follows: the Coalition has been unable to
take neither Nassyrea, nor Basra or Umm-Kasser. Iraq army uses armoured
divisions and artillery quite efficiently, they have also been able to
maneuver and attack. The battles near Najaf are still continuing. The Iraq
army holds a defensive line from the south to the west of the country, from
Umm-Kasser through Basra and to Najaf. Part of the troops attacking Najaf have
been moved to help out the 3rd motorized division, which was attacked on
Sunday morning at Basra. At Nassyrea the Coalition troops have succeeded to
push the enemy almost into the city itself, street fighting has issued. In
this area the Iraqi casualties are nearly 20 tanks, up to two artillery
batteries and more than 100 soldiers. The Coalition casualties are: around 10
tanks, a small number of APC's, up to 15 soldiers. The abovementioned
statistics are from morning till noon Sunday. Umm-Kasser has not been taken,
however there is no more information about it's defense. Heavy fighting
continues on the borders of the city and in the city itself. On the Fao
peninsula superior numbers of Iraq units are constantly attacking the British
forces, supported by tanks and artillery. Divisions of the Republican Guard
have been moved away from Basra, there are only several regular units and and
the garrison of the city defending it (around 30,000 soldiers, 200 tanks and
nearly 300 guns). The Coalition is continuously bombing the city both with
planes and cruise missiles. Hussein has been moving the more capable units
into the interior of the country, to the line of El-Amara - Ed-Dyvanya.
