I'm happily running to a secret chocolate exp area my wiz friend coded next to
my pcity, and suddenly
'You are still recovering from your last swimming failure.'
'You are still recovering from your last swimming failure.'
'You are still recovering from your last swimming failure.'
etc...
This is no good. I sometimes run to a river/lake/waterwhatsoever and look at
my character slowly drown while i masturbate to honor its/her/his memory and
wait for a new exciting reincarnation.
And this safe mode ruins my pleasure. And it hampers my running to my
chocolate-exp-area(cea from now on if i happen to need the term).
Why has this been changed? Because it's more realistic? Or we like to be
better protected? I can swim through some wussy two-square-running river even
if i have some seal-mark!(If you don't understand, ask Kohothegreat). Perhaps
I like some small damage I take crossing a river.
If this kind of feature is here to stay, I'd like to be able to turn it off at
least.
Like: 'set_no_safe_at_swimming_off_to_on/off or something.

Done. At boot you should see a 'set bypass_swim_safety'-setting. This is not
set by default. Setting it will cause you to ignore the swimming failure
delays, so you can go about happily drowning to your local bay.

I see.

I make a change to the game with the intent that
a) it will build believability
b) it makes a certain ability/skill set more useful
c) it keeps players from killing themselves by accident
d) it makes players actually think about the world in which they live in

And under 24 hours later, this is the kind of whining it generates? You're
really that upset that a touch of realism interferes with your precious walk
macros, which have you sprint over raging rapids with little more than a
high-school gym class worth of swim skill?

I've watched some alarming trends in BatMUD in the time I've been a coder
here, and this is probably the pinnacle to which these trends have been
climbing. The ability to cross high waters without drowning in some way,
shape, or form is available, at very low cost, to every background and just
about every guild in the game, and not even at very high levels, either.
There's a good bit of eq out there that lets you bypass this problem. Half the
races in the game don't worry about it. Hell, if you read news far back
enough, you'll see where people asked for a "make walk stop when we start
drowning" tune. And yet, those few people who, and this can only be deliberate
action on their part, have chosen to have no ability to cross deep water, want
to be able to pass over it anyhow as if it didn't exist? You want no
consequences for your actions, and the rest of you _agree with that_?

Newbiehood, I mean, Nevahood's post may have been posted sarcastically, but
the points he makes are the same trend I've been seeing with more and more
players these days. "Give us something we don't deserve and makes no sense,
just so we can keep playing without thinking". This goes especially with the
continent tune. Melemkor (and others) spent an enormous amount of time making
a large, rich canvas on which we could paint a well-developed fantasy world.
And most of you would rather ignore that and stomp Digga bunnies without even
the tiniest iota of RPG, even those that would barely even slow you down if
you gave it even a minute's worth of thought.

Congratulations, you just did what I really hoped would never happen. You just
made "help why archwizards are assholes" apply to me. I hope you're really
proud of yourselves.

Seriously dude, chill out. This isn't suffeli and whatnot. We just want the
right to drown ourselves as quickly as possible. Is that so bad?

A suggestion for those who want such a thing (and it's realistic!) command
"drown" which makes you take certain amount of damage when you are in
river/lake/sea/whatever. Such an amount that you have to hit it more than once
to actually get killed...

But no doubt someone would find inventive ways to abuse that too...
