I decided to go ahead and share my Potion Spreadsheet with everyone.
I chose to arrange mine with ORGAN as the main axis, because there are less
Organs than there are Herbs or Minerals. So each PAGE is a single organ, with
a (herb x mineral) matrix. There are basically three macros in my potion
spreadsheet, which are used to eliminate combinations.
If you try a potion combination and you get no message, you know that there is
no potion formula such that the current (mineral x organ x herb) has any two
of these three components present. If you get this situation, you do
"Ctrl-Shift-N". This places an "X" in every spot for this Herb and Mineral on
the current page. It also places on "X" in the spot for that particular herb
x mineral combination on every other organ page. So with this one piece of
research, we have now eliminated 103 possible combinations. (52 minerals for
the current herb x organ, 28 additional herbs for the current mineral x organ,
and 22 organs for the current herb x mineral).
If we instead got a message that said "You feel close . . . it may be (potion
name)", this means that TWO of these THREE components are correct to make a
potion of that name. If this occurs, write the word "CLOSE" in the current
intersection, and change to the "CLOSE" tab of the spreadsheet. Record the
potion name, and the mineral, organ, herb that got that result. Next, we need
to determine WHICH of the two were correct. Go to either another mineral or
another herb, retaining the other two components.
so far example: we have tried adamantium, arm, apple and got the message
"Close . . . it may be acid rain"
So we know that 2 of our 3 are right. Now try, as an example, aluminium, arm,
apple. If we still get the message "Close . . . it may be acid rain" we get
TWO valuable pieces of information. First: we know that the formula for acid
rain contains: (?mineral?, arm, apple) and secondly, we know that there is no
potion for ARM where either ADAMANTIUM or ALUMINIUM are used. In this case,
go to the ADAMANTIUM row and do "Ctrl+Shift+M" to eliminate this mineral for
this potion. Also do "Ctrl+Shift+M" on the ALUMINIUM row.
Why do we know this? Because of this! If there was another potion that used
the combination "Aluminium, Arm, ?herb?" we would have got the "CLOSE" message
WITHOUT A POTION NAME. When you receive the "CLOSE" message without a potion
name, there are two overlapping formulas at work. Because we did NOT receive
an overlapping message, we may safely "X" out this entire mineral on this
page.
If we tested our second formula and received no message at all, we would
instead do "Ctrl-Shift-N" for the spot (aluminium, arm, apple) because we know
that there are no potions containing ARM (our current page) and either
aluminium or apple. There are also no potions on any other organ page
containing aluminium and apple, so these will also be eliminated from
consideration.
We are still not quite done here. Now that we know aluminium is NOT part of
