Suggestions on both sides of the powergamer debate center around making things
really, really expensive. Sadly, many people have historically bought into
this wrongheaded thinking. Hint: If someone is willing to request an expensive
uptune, they aren't liable to give a sh*t about an expense related downtune.
Such cost increases might...for a time...tune the top 5%, but you tune midbie
whiners far more with the same swipe, both because there are more of them and
because they aren't already at the top of the now steeper slope.
The ever nastier eqdamage and personal exp tunes represent an evolution in
tune theory, attempting to make it more worthwhile to do one's own equipment
and vary areas visited. An intelligent try, but it doesn't actually address
the real problem, as one can gather by the unabated rape whines. Ultimately,
the flaw lurking behind almost every recent tune is the unwillingness of
anyone to suggest that the minority nearly every player wants to join be given
more stuff to do, and more power to do it with. This harms play balance even
more than remorting, and I don't say that lightly. Either do a conversion or
let the big fish get bigger and put them in the ocean with some sharks.
