If this is set to on, then batmud admins will send e-mail about major system
maintenance to your registered e-mail address.

Then, if the machine is going to be down for something such as a power outage,
even people who didn't login during that very very short time period between
the announcement and the machine going down will know about alternate forums
for bat discussions (classic, pigeon, bulletin boards, etc).
