I have played many different MMORPG systems and it seems to me there is a fear
and disregard for the Gladiator system of PvP in batmud. i understand that
exsessive pkilling is not a good thing, but there are ways to set limits. 1)
Who - A pkiller could only kill a set amount of people a day, and only if the
other is PvP flagged. if you wanna fight and sign up for PvP, you know what
you are getting into. 2) Newbie killing - Level restriction for the PvP flag,
and also a levelspread of who can fight. say 10 levels plus or minus the level
of the higher combatant. 3) Repetition kills - the limit of people the player
can kill also has draw backs and bonuses. each person killed adds to the
gladiators "Honor" but takes away from a vital point of gameplay, say a stat
decrease, or an EXP percentage cut from a 24 hour period
that accumulates for each PvP kill in a set time. make it not worth the hassle
to kill someone repeatedly. but thats just my two mowgles on the matter

There's more to that than just the things you mention IMO. To start with,
people do not want to participate in pkilling activities, since the would like
to have their EQ parties unbothered, and not to be summoned out of the middle
to get their asses whooped.

Here you'd say - make the PvP flag toggleable. But then I assure you, it will
be abused.

All in all. Whatever has been tried (and I've seen at least 2 incarnations of
player killing system) there're always like... 5-6 people who sign up. There's
just something about player killing and this MUD that doesn't go along.

^o^
