I got a mudmail asking "does blue glow from prot item have any effect on
chests?" It does not. Blue glow is like any other prot spell, in that it has
next to no effect on small amounts of damage. The damage done to a chest in
any one day is too small for the blue glow to have any real effect.

The protect item spell was mostly developed for nonweapon, nonarmour items
that get carried around -- herb jars, reagent pouches, that sort of thing. It
keeps them from being badly damaged from one of those "hit your pack" crits we
see happening to nonmerchants every so often. It works pretty well on mount
barding too. ANd it probably helps when a chest is hit with a damaging spell.
But not chest damage, which is just too little.
