This is your yearly chance to get an icon for your MUD added to the zMUD
startup screen.
---

For detailed information on what a \"zMUD startup icon is\", go to
the Icon Information page. For detailed information on how the bidding process
for the zMUD icons works, go to the Bidding Information page.

To create an account to bid on an icon or to view your existing bidding
account, go to the Main Bidding Page.

If you have questions on the bidding process, post them here or send email to
zugg@zuggsoft.com.

Bidding will end at Midnight, February 23rd, 2006 (PST).

Each year we hold an auction to determine which ten MUD icons get displayed in
the initial zMUD startup screen. This is one of the best ways to advertise a
MUD since it puts your MUD icon in the face of brand new MUD players who are
looking for a MUD to play. Last year, the startup icons were downloaded over
100,000 times by new MUD players.

In 2006, the top-ten icons that win the bidding process will also be added to
CMUD when it is released. Since every installation of CMUD will be a NEW
installation, the icons will be seen by even more people that before (in the
past only new installations of zMUD got the latest icons downloaded).

Last year, the top icon position went for $4000, and the tenth icon position
went for $1100. Remember that in case of a tie, the earliest bid wins.

Let the bidding for 2006 begin!

Sure sounds quite easy and painless way to advertise.

A :-D hits you.

Thanks for letting us know about this. It's been
one of the few constructive marketing ideas in
a long time :)

I am not personally fully convinced about the
marketing hype from the Zuggsoft site. zMUD is
a decent client, but without any actual facts,
I would argue that mostly it is installed by
people who have already selected a mud (i.e.
they first use telnet or a webbased client to
connect to a MUD they have found, and only then
learn that they could download ZMUD to get a
better mudding experience). I don't think it's
very common that a person who has no knowledge
of MUDs whatsoever, first downloads a large
software package, installs it and only then
proceed to pick a game to play.

We'll discuss the matter and try to get a little
info from the games that have been featured on
the list during 2005.

I agree with your initial assessment... I first stumbled across bat many years
ago and didn't even know what a mud client was before then. However,
even though I had batmud picked out when i initially downloaded zmud I DID
test out some of the other muds listed in the mudconnector and I especially
remember trying all of the muds that had icons placed on the connect page.

My point is that while I agree that most people who download zmud are already
regulars on some other mud, that doesn't necessarily preclude them from trying
out the other muds in the connector. Also, while I admit I'm not familiar
with BAT Ry's budget, I would imagine that a brief opening of donations would
more than cover the $4k cost for the advertising.

My 2 cents... if it matters at all.

This Zuggsoft icon idea is one of the few news posts in 7 years I bothered to
read or reply to, and I think it might be a very positive thing for batmud to
participate in. While of course the results might vary and cannot really be
anticipated easily (unless you talk to the other muds who bid last year or see
how many bid again this year) it is one of the few ways that BatMUD can
advertise quite cheaply and easily. It would also be nice to see our own(?)
icon when I download and plant zmud around campus on various computers (as my
own advertising technique). On a brief note about Finance: as addressed by
Val, BatMUD could buy at least better than spot 10 with my donates alone, =D.
I think it's a good use of those funds and anything that increases our
visibility and our incoming player base is worth investigating.

This is a followup post on the suggestion that
BatMUD should participate in bidding on an icon
in ZMud.

BatMUD took part in Zuggsoft's ZMud Icon auction
for 2006, but unfortunately did not finish among
the top 10 bidders.

Basically what happened was that the deadline of
the auction was set at March 23rd at 0:00 EST,
which translates into March 23rd at 7:00 am EET.
At 03:30 am EET BatMUD was at position 6 in the
auction (which would have guaranteed us an icon
in Zmud) with no new bids in sight. At this time
I decided to call it a night, having work in the
morning.

A few hours later, several last minute bids were
placed (including raising some bids that BatMUD
had topped). As we did not have a chance to react
to these last minute changes, BatMUD consequently
fell to position 11. Incidently, this is a bigger
issue than BatMUD - on the icon list of 2006 there
will (based on a quick glance) only be MUDs with
US/Canadian administration.

I have sent some feedback on the matter to Zuggsoft,
but for 2006 there will unfortunately not be a
BatMUd icon in the startup page of ZMud. The idea,
however, was good and the submitter of it will be
awarded some taskpoints. Should You have other ideas
how BatMUD can market itself, please let us know.
