I just read the update regarding Malar's Abandoned barn area and
a question occurs to me (not specifically about that area).

I am wondering what kind of characters are considered, by the wizzards,
to be Highbies, midbies and lowbies/newbies. I wonder this because
various wizzards often use these descriptions when they communicate
quite useful information.

Despite the fact that I do have some clue about what makes a highbie,
midbie or lowbie (newbie), I am not looking for any particularly specific
answer, just a general idea.

A quick look around at what appears to be the current player base suggests
that there are quite a lot of players with a fair amount of exp/levels etc.
With rebirthers thrown into the mix, I'm none too sure about where
todays lowbie and midbie ranges begin and end.

Oh, and feel free to let me know how much of a nuub/lowbie I am (or not).

Since it was a wizard that used the term midbie/highbie, you could deduce that
he didn't have any "game knowledge skillz" in mind when he used the term.

Furthermore, since it's and area (calling one room an area might be stretching
it a bit?) in question you might deduce that codewise it's hard to create a
personal scale of highbie/midbie. Would you compare the time spent in the mud?
Then Obanez is a highbie. Or rebirths? Then Delveling would be a highbie.
So, if you exclude all the little things that REALLY makes the difference
between highbie and midbie, just one thing remains.

Level.

Since we wizards are grey-bearded old farts with no common sense, we use this
simple formula:
(Maxlevel - Minlevel) / 2 = MID. The upper extreme would be highbies and the
lower extreme newbies.

Good enough for you? :-)

On the other hand, I have used exptotals and other stuff in the
past^H^H^H^Hfuture.

Yeah, that's a fairly reasonable answer. However, it does leave me
with one comment:

These days a complete novice/newbie might take a while to get the
hang of how things work in Bat and how to make some exp/gold etc.
Once such a person has figured things out, they can pretty easily
advance to around level 30-45. If level 50, or thereabouts, is
considered midbie, then the only "lowbies" will be real novices
and folks spending a brief amount of time at lower levels during
a reinc. Anyone with a bit more experience of Bat, unless a serial
suicider, is going to be able to reach "midbie" levels pretty
quickly. Also, from my recollection of the exp plaque, the lower
half of the active players does include a fair number of people
with quite high levels (75+), I don't think many of these would
actually be considered to be close to being highbies.

Hah, I should finish reading news before posting any generic post-related
questions from now on...
