In areas that have maps (such as arelium) can there be a setting show show us
things in the order we care about. Ie when doing the gong quest and not
really caring where guards are, can we see items in the map before it shows
armours/money/people/etc? Or perhaps a way of turning off seeing certain
symbols?

I happen to agree here. It does make since, and would open up some good
midlevel parties. Sinve everyone is always saying we need more player
interaction. This might be another jump start for that.

The order in which things show up on the map is based mostly on their
importance, followed by their size. After all, I bet if we had players
ambushed by a giant red dragon covered up by a single mowgles coin on the
ground, we'd probably hear people complaining about that between screams of
fiery, burning agony. So no, in general, that is not going to change. Coins,
armour, and weapons are assumed to be lying on the ground, and monsters are
assumed to be standing over them. You get to see one symbol, it's the monster.

The gong, however, is "huge". I think it's fair to say you'd notice a "huge"
gong across the street. So effective immediately, it shows on the map more
significantly than it did before.

I think the request was for the _option_ to change it -- not a request to
change it for everyone... unless I misread?

You misread nothing. I'm pointing out why you're not getting the option.
