Because some things only happen once per boot, why not make boot every 25
hours rather than every 24? On a graduating basis, this would give all
players the opportunity to participate in these precious opportunities
equally.
Now, I would expect those people for whom boot is presently convenient to
frown upon this because they don't want to lose a good thing, but other than
selfish interest, I cannot think of a reason *not* to do this, given how this
would even the playing field for those who have boot at 4am, for example.
Just my two cents.

What you are proposing is not new and has been discussed many times.

You are right that its problematic with having a fixed boot time,
but it is also problematic to have a shifting boot:

1. It is confusing for players (especially those who are not
logged on daily) to keep track of when the boot is, and plan
their parties etc accordingly. Previously this was a bigger
issue when players' had to be worried about not logging on
in time for boot and risking to lose their eq.

2. By shifting the boot with 1 hour every day, many days the
boottime would only be optimal for those in the Far East
(china/japan/oceania) - we don't really have alot of players
in those timezones.

3. Many code changes are implemented around boot (to ensure the
state of the MUD remains in sync). Finnish daytime is
convenient for these, as there is usually always admins and
wizards around to deal with unexpected problems. If boots
were at nighttime, we would have to postpone such code
changes or just risk having nobody here to deal with the
potential bugs/problems.

4. Quite a few of the games' scripts rely on a fixed boottime.
This could ofcourse be fixed and modified, but would still
require some work to do so (examples: backups, replication
of data).

I'm not saying a shifting boot would be bad or impossible (though
it would probably make more sense to only shift it to suit a few
timezones: boot at Finnish noon on mon, wed, fri, sun, boot at noon
EST/PST on tue, thu, sat or similar). But there are disadvantages
to such an approach too and the better approach is to find and
fix those things which reset only and boot (alot of such fixes
have already been implemented).

This fix has been already preoposed many times in the past. Sadly, the
situation of changing boot times runs into many other problems, such as
reliably scheduling parties, people logging on and opening chests directly at
boot, etc. The truly unfortunate thing is that many wizards either refuse to
recognize or just dont care the inherent advantage of being able to check/run
eq/mobs at boot. Thanks to juggelo's care about us non-eeters many things now
work better for people who cant be on at boot. But many other things (ahem,
zoo, ahem Malitrius areas) are all fucked by a few hours after boot or so.

I think we will prolly just have to live with boots being at 4am and try to
get those wizzes who care to adjust/add appropriate rape prots...
