As we all know, BatMUD is a mature society and a serious, lifelong hobby for
many - not just yet another computer game. Wizards make this all possible -
thanks to them - but also many mortals contribute to the game in various ways.
They help arranging conventions, promoting BatMUD, helping each other, testing
things out, building fan web sites, giving ideas & feedback etc. Perhaps, they
eventually ascend to the immortality, fix stuff, code new content and so on.

I have a feeling, that pretty much every wizard experiences a painful writer's
(or coder's or whatever) block now and then - many grow frustrated and remort
- maybe even with a bunch of nearly finished areas and stuff, that will never
get into the game. Which is a loss.

Many mortals have will and skills either for writing good stories, writing
good code or even both, but they may love playing way too much to ever
actually daring to immort. The leap is too big. Which might be a loss as well.

How about alleviating these problems just a bit by setting up a "sandbox lpmud
server" of sorts for mortals on some beaten up on a corner of some beaten-up
spare 90s' Pentium? The server should not have gamelib content from BatMUD or
anything - it should be just a vanilla LDMud set up with maybe some very basic
configuration copied from Bat if needed.

Applying for an account on that server and actually writing a few decent item,
room or monster descriptions on it could be natural step for a mortal on the
road of becoming a wizard. Old, remorted wizards could get their unfinished
code on that server and they could go on developing it if they felt like it.

It'd be nice for wizards to be able ask for their mortal friends to contribute
a few room descs or something like that when they run out of ideas. "Hey, that
sounds reasonable. I couldn't have thought that up myself now that I've
written like 20 gloomy forest rooms already. Why don't you just go log on the
sandbox and write those descs for me? I'll see if I could use some of it in my
area."

This is a great idea, one which I have personally been pondering for some time
now. I would like to make it possible for mortals to be able to do some area
coding without actually immorting. However there are a few hurdles to get over
before that will happen. One of which is that we can't make the whole lib
public, but at the same time we can't just put up a vanilla LDMud because it
would limit
the coders potential severely since our lib is highly customized.

The second complication is that setting up such a server would be very time
consuming, it may take weeks if not months to get it setup to be usable. There
are a bunch of things that would need to be made specifically for it.

If and when we have someone with enough "power" and motivation to do this, I'm
sure it will be discussed further and perhaps even implemented.

How about you just maintain a list of people willing to write
code/descs/stories/whatnot and contact mortals directly who sign up based on
their ability. I will jump at the chance for doing any room descs, or help on
extra stories and whatnot. That way, if a wizard needs some grunt work done,
he can check the list and see who's signed up for what he needs done.
