So I've gotten many requests to run some new data, similar to the last one I
did at the end of November/beginning of December with respect to voting, and
here's what I found:
Taking the data from 1 Apr 2010 to 30 Nov 2010, I calculated what is called a
Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient against the number of 'votes'
people claimed to do via the 'voted' command vs. the number of players created
each day. This coefficient, ranging from -1.0 (no correlation) to 1.0 (perfect
correlation) shows how much the two sets of data relate to eachother. The PPMC
for April through November was a mere 0.376, indicating a medium correlation
between the two sets of data. Well, after factoring in the new data for
December and January, as well as taking first place at TMC for quite some time
now and 4-5th place at TMS, the results are rather astounding. I found that
there is now a correlation of 0.747, which is very, very good.
What does this mean?
This means that not only is there significant evidence that voting impacts the
recruitment of new players, but all of your hard work has effectively doubled,
if not tripled, the amount of players we're getting coming to this game each
day to check us out. While I do not currently have data to show what the
mortal playerbase has been like, from a glance at the numbers here and there,
it seems that we are slowly growing in the number of players hanging around
each day. I'm working on finding out some information on a tool that keeps
track of this info and I'll try to report it to you asap to hopefully provide
some evidence of this. That being said, here is a graph of such data, you can
see the huge surge in players as of my last post in December, which seems to
have gotten most of you interested in voting again. One thing that also needs
explaining is a few 'jumps' in the blue line without a jump in the red. This
usually indicates some sort of advertising campaign that we have spent money
on, which does provide some error to the calculation, but it's also somewhat
rare. (Examples: Mid-August, Mid-January)

Anyways, keep up the good work. Stay tuned for a recap on the last few years
and what's to come in 2011 and the near future.
