The goal has never been to screw anybody. I know it was a new idea to
BatMUD, that travelling between continents and whatnot would take some
time. But we are certainly not the first game where it has been
implemented that travel is not instantaneous. Virtually all mmorpg's
and several MUDs include travel time for several reasons:
- It gives an appearance of distance between the locations
- It has an impact on PvP situations (you don't get to your enemy
in a heartbeat)
- It has an impact on PvE situations where ressers/merchants may not
be available at 1 second notice.
Obviously there are players who are hellbent that everything should
be like it always was, and that all travel should be instant. But I
fail to see the logic of why non-instant travel works on all the other
games but would be an impossibility here. Seems to me like it's just
a matter of people not giving it a chance.

I never said the goal was to screw up anyone. But the result is what counts.
Although I understand the reasons you set out, Gore, I sort of look from a
player's perspective. A -player- does not come here for realism. He/she comes
here to have fun. And spending time on travelling just because it's 'more
logical' or 'more real' doesn't make it more fun. On the contrary.
Ok, and once again, I ask the question of what MMORPG has instant player to
player travel, across zones. I very distinctly recall having to run through
several 'zones' to find a party and team up, not to mention traveling via boat
in everquest was very much just sitting and idling, without even the luxury of
'the boat moves east'. IIRC it was pretty much wait here, in a small 'room'
untill we reached the other side. Honestly, if you really insist on beliving
the reason people are running, not walking, to play WoW is because of this
travel tune, you are fooling yourself.
Old players get bored when there is nothing left to defeat, and new players
are more interested in pictures and flashy animations.
Granted, I will admit its been a long while since I played EQ, and slightly
less so for FF11, however I would be hard pressed to imagine that travel has
since been uprooted and completely changed. Part of the charm to the whole
MMORPG experience, as I understood it, was always the 'massive' feel to the
world, which is defined by what? Travel time. If I am wrong... PLEASE correct
me. Tell me what game out there has instant travel.
