There seem to be many races with somekind of vulnerabilities towards
something. I suggest making them all work in similar fashion. Either they all
just do more damage, or they all make the character randomly run . I think it
would be hilarious if all water allergic races would run around in the oceans
or if shadows and vampires would run around burning in daylight their hands
waving about.
How about you make cyclops playable to anyone whose scale of targets ( party,
solo, explore, whatever) goes beyond newbie mines. The poor one-eyes already
penalized with utterly useless spellmax ( and cost) and absatively hideous
exprates!

ps. no really, dont try to bring any mud-context specific realism into the
debate, just remove the silliness.
BatMUD has far too many races to realisticly be able to balance them all,
while keeping them unique and interesting. There will always be a race that
is perceived to be weaker than some other race (and in this community of
minmaxing, weaker is synonymous with "unplayable").
From a game development perspective, it is far more serious if one or a
few races are far superior to anything else, than to ensure that every one
of our 40+ races have advantages that outweigh any negative aspects of the
race. Part of the purpose of having so many races is that some of them are
situational - i.e. they may have quirky stats or abilities that only make
them viable for certain gameplay - for example a race with high exprate but
otherwise bad stats, or a race that behaves badly when taking certain kind
of damage.
So it is far less relevant to see that we have only 1 duergar/zombie online
(assuming the players who have chosen the race have fun being one), than
to notice that 10-15% of the players are ducks.
