A few of us on one of my ss channels were talking about the somewhat
recent gemcutting tune. A couple of interesting ideas were tossed
around and I thought they sounded like nice ideas, so I'm posting here.

Now, we realise that the current tune was put into place because of
gemcutting on a massive scale was causing large quantities of cash to
be injected into the bat-economy. One way around this artificial
inflation would be to revert the gemcutting tune, and make it so that
player-cut gems cannot be sold in shops. Instead make a gem, or jewlers
exchange where players can sell gemstones to other players. It would help
those who are always looking for 'x' type of gem, and it would help merchants
and alchemists be able to cut larger quantities of gemstones for their
purposes.

One side effect of this tune has been even scarcer hematites, moonstones,
and ambers. With some sort of jewel exchange, this could be avoided
somewhat. Alternately, leave the current tune but increase the spawn
rate of the above gems.

Perhaps enough time has passed now where people can think on the tune,
and some sensible alternatives.

This is something of a concern for me as well. I'm planning for merchant/alch
reinc next and am wondering will I be able to make alch rings. I haven't done
it before, so I don't know how many gems are needed.

From a balance standpoint, if it stays as is, the XP cost for gem cutting skill
should be cut way down.

From an alchemists standpoint, it won't be any more difficult to create the
gems needed. You can easily make your own supply. As far as the XP cost goes,
it's still a very useful skill, in more ways than one. It's quite on the same
level as blacksmithing and the like.
And as for a gem exchange, since you can't really cut the most wanted gems
(moonstones, ambers), I don't think it's much of a moneymaker for merchants
anyway. In any case, it probably wouldn't be too much of a hassle to do if
some wizard finds the time for it.

It seems that the idea is that a gem exchange is meant to be coupled with
making gems unable to be sold at general stores (similarly to pieces of
material). As such, the gem exchange would remove the need to have the
gem-cutting tune at all. If the only market for gems is other players, then
it addresses the issue of large influxes of cash into the game.
