So I needed some feathers, so...off to kill birds. Killed 42 birds and
used skinning at their corpses. Here are the results, they seem....
odd to me.
My stats: 100% skinning skill, 260 dex.
42 birds killed, 11 feathers hunks harvested, 10 flesh chunks, 5 fur
pieces, 7 leather pieces, 3 wool strips and 7 fumbles, where I cut my
hand and mutilate the corpse out of vengeance.
I understand not always getting feathers, or whatever, from the corpses
you harvest, but some of the results. fur....wool? from birds? and
there were quite a few of those fumble messages as well.
I'm guessin the skill is "working as intended" but its rather
disappointing.

I made that change to skinning myself. Previously, skinning would grant a
completely random material, no matter what you killed. You still got wool from
birds, fur from ants, etc. I decided at the time not to remove that entirely,
and I'm sticking with that. Simply put, there aren't enough spiders in the
game to have only spiders drop silk (for example).
