Hello everyone, I am quite new to batmud but have played a heavily modified
DIKU mud for many years. As a new player I've received lots of assistance and
even a bit of advice. So first off, thank you for the warm welcome!

The reason for my post is that I recently joined the Spider guild as a
result of overall stubbornness after being advised against it. While I don't
mind a steep learning curve. The absence of many help files, with regards to
the guild and various abilities related to it, has me at least a bit worried
that it is in some sort of early development phase. Is this the case or am I
just in for a very bloody crawl toward higher levels? If my future as a Spider
is fated for disaster, would anyone have any other suggestions for an evil
religious human looking to enjoy some batmud?

On the off chance that I've already made a fun choice, any advice for a
young spider? :D

Thanks,
Hoyt

Some guilds like spiders and tigers used to be "secret" guilds that nobody
talked about and there were no official help files or skill/spell lists and so
on. This is not the case anymore and those guilds are listed with complete
skills and spells in the website help files just like all the other guilds.
But there are still many skills and spells that lack informative text in their
help files. If that is intentional or just that nobody has gotten around to
update them the last 5 years or so I don't know. It is what it is however, and
those skills and spells aren't that hard to figure out. So a few days of
playing around with it and trying it out should explain most to you.

That being said, I also have to agree with the others telling you that spiders
aren't a good standalone choice. While you do get the basic combat skills,
they are limited to low skill levels. Dodge, parry, combat sense and so on
caps at 60 or so, which is not nearly good enough to be a standalone fighting
guild. You will struggle alot with those low skill levels, even against
reasonably sized monsters. As a new player it will also be hard for you to get
access to decently sized demons. Getting a good demon requires you to
sacrifice quite valuable items, and even then it is very random what kind of
demon you get. You can end up sacrificing 20 very valuable items without
getting a single "really good" demon. And buying a really good demon from
another player costs tons as well.

Spider guild is an exceptionally fun "secondary" guild tho. Paired with evil
priests or tigers for example it offers alot of extra stuff.

As a newbie/lowbie evil_religious player I would much rather advice you to
look into disciple+tzarakk. It offers good fighting skills and a mount to help
you even more.

The spider is still more or less a hidden guild, remnant from the old ages.
Thus, the skills/spells are hidden from the general popula as well.

No, spider is not in early development, more of a late life in need
of some facelift to modernize it some. Feel free to throw any valid
solid easy-to-implement ideas my way, some might even get implemented.

As to help files, I recommend training/studying every skill to 1%, then
reading the help file for that skill/spell. That's the best advice I
can give to a new spider, then if you don't fully grasp something,
spider channel or newbie work as an outlet for specific questions.

Not sure if I remember spider guild correctly, but after reinc and having the
demon the guild was pretty much there. Nothing else to be seen or done.

So some facelift ideas:
1) Developing the demon. With sacrifice you could get some demon, but mainly
it would develope by playing. Receive bonuses and stats from the fed eq, that
might not last forever. But some of the benefits would grow while you play.
2) Overhaul to the skills/spells lists. Like earlier stated, this is mostly
secondary guild. Why not actually make it more worthwhile. Bit more tank
stuff, spells that would help you playing evil_religious.

3) Guild content, maybe some tasks that spider queen wants to devour some
eqs(little run around tasks that would provide some bumfun). Reinc for the
demon, so it could train/develope different skills/spells/bonuses.

Just few thoughts...

It would be nice to see a small re-work for multiple weaponry skills.

knights/ghost/animists/monk had some unique iconic skills based on choice!
barb/kharim/ranger + bst all had one single unique maneuver

For evil relig, maybe spider can fill that gap with iconic polearms,
Unarmed, small and long blades attacks based on choices of guilds?

Would it be possible the timers for demon sustaining got a look at?
It just feels so short! Even at the middling range when just beginning
to earn your demony summons, the timers are a copy/paste feeling design
used on spawn forms. Which means if you use spawn AND demon your
refreshing both every 20-ish minutes when get towards maxing your skills.

Finally this is just a bit of a personal desire. Would it be possible
so long as you keep demons in your body, or in body of another. When
Demon is kept fully fed, once and a while it would do something to aid
the host? I personally feel like when droping below 60% Hps, there
could be a chance for the demon to reflect some damage (10-25%?) back
at the enemy for a few rounds. The host dies, the demon should NOT
want that to happen until it has exploited all it can while in its host.
