I think Batmud's stance on piracy may need defining. I'm concerned that the
actions of a few could harm the rest. Particularly, I see any level piracy
being tolerated on batmud as capable of sparking a lawsuit that could bankrupt
BATry and destroy the entire Batmud community.

A long conversation on bat channel sparked my interest, for brevity, I
included the important statements.

01:01:Favorit bat: anyone has O'Reilly's practical C programming in pdf or any
other electronical format?
01:05:Lythlandria bat: are you arguing that it is okay to solicit for copies
of copyrighted material through batmud?
01:05:Favorit bat: yes I am.
01:06:Favorit bat: but that's none of your businness.
01:07:Favorit bat: I'm responsible for what i code, and for keeping bat code
copyrighted, that's about it.

Questions: Is solicitation of copyrighted material through the Batmud medium
tolerated? Who is responsible for piracy when it occurs?

Ok, let's clarify things a bit. Cuz these "important" statements make me a
little bit uncertain about mental state of the author of previous article, so
i'll provide a bit more statements. That "long" conversation on bat actually
started from my phrase:

Favorit <bat>: anyone has O'Reilly's practical C programming in pdf or any
other electronical format?
Lythlandria [bat]: please don't use bat for your pirating pursuits
Lythlandria [bat]: the legal ramifications of it are dangerous
Favorit <bat>: oh, just carry on with your businness please. I just ordered
it.
Lythlandria [bat]: imagine several players logging your request, and notifing
O'Reilly's that batmud wizards endorse piracy.
Lythlandria [bat]: Batry would suffer for it
Lythlandria [bat]: donations open again as BATry defends itself from lawsuit
Aldarion [bat]: when Lyth, when?
Glaurung [bat]: not all wizards are members of bat ry
Lythlandria [bat]: I am postulating Aldarion
Lythlandria [bat]: are you arguing that it is okay to solicit for copies of
copyrighted material through batmud?
Favorit <bat>: yes I am.
Milk [bat]: you think it happens through batmud if link is told?
Favorit <bat>: but that's none of your businness.
Lythlandria [bat]: you're a bigger fool than I thought Favorit
Favorit <bat>: you're an idiot, lyth, honestly. I run irc server, am i
responsible for what people say?
Lythlandria [bat]: being a wizard carrys a little more responsibility
Favorit <bat>: not at all

So... looking at my previous post we can determine that Lythlandria tries to
blame me in piracy. "Piracy" in her/his mind is something that has to deal
with what people say/want/state. So if I say I want to kill Yes-sir Arafat,
that would be a threat, and I'm a murderer.

Please spare me. If you have nothing to say, or you have no brains, or you do
not understand what are laws, what are copyringhts and what kind of
responsibilities public services carry, do not even try to dive into it.

Thank you so much for reading this.

BatMUD does not endorse piracy of any kind, and using
bat to publicly exchange w4r3z in a clearly illegal manner
is an offense which will lead to bans and/or removal.

That being said, B.A.T. ry does not operate under US laws,
and DMCA:s and other perversions of justice aren't really
applicable in Finland. Additionally, the liability of a
service provider is limited to that of removing offensive
links and material at the request of the appropriate
government (or copyright owner's) request. Merely carrying
a conversation where someone asks if anybody has a piece
of literature in electronic format does not constitute
piracy (I don't see a "send me a copy" message) and is not
something B.A.T. ry can be held liable for - sharing the
material from Bat's servers would be another issue.
