The April Fool's event came to an end that was, at least as far as I was
concerned, successful.

Perhaps you remember the BatMUD survey from a while back? One of the topics
that came up wer that some players wanted to see:
-- significant one-shot events
-- massive multi-party battles
-- increased character interaction

From players' involvment (or lack thereof) in this particular event, I think
it is safe to say that this sort of thing can work. While this exact event
won't happen again, the lessons it provided the BatMUD administration will
help shape future such events. You won't see them often, but you will see
them.

Special thanks to Entor and Balthas who really got this event moving.

Since it won't be run again, could you tell those of use who are completely
clueless and ignorant what the event was all about and how it could have been
ended/solved?

Ok, fair enough.

THe exomorphs were creatures that appeared in groups of 4 at random intervals
in random player-occupied rooms. From there, they wandered around absorbing
monsters they encountered. This meant that, if left alone too long, they would
eventually start eating shopkeepers, quest monsters, cash mobs, and pcity
guards. Obviously, this would be seen by some as unacceptable. Worse, they got
stronger every monster they ate (well, the _next_ one would be stronger, as
when one ate, it died).

So, time to start attacking them, right? Well that's fair enough, except
they're also programmed to learn spells cast against them, and sometimes just
random spells of a player in the room. This means, the harder you fought, the
stronger the next batch would be. It was particularly annoying once they got
their hands on summon, reloc, ress and raise. (Note: they summon each other,
not players) Between their new spell list and their increasing power level,
they started to become dangerous foes (although you could just ignore them).

SO, find out where they're coming from and kill them would be the next step.
Since the exomorphs started kidnapping players in combat with them and taking
them to their lair, it wouldn't be too long before the location of that lair
was discovered. Of course, at this point, it was full of powerful exomorphs.
It would take a strong party to clear them out.

At this point, the "April Fools!" part of the event ends and the real "how do
BatMUD players react to things" experiement began. The source of the exomorphs
were five large monsters in abig "arena" with four pools in the corners. Every
time one of the big monsters was beaten to 1hp, it became invulernable while
the pools slowly healed it back to full. The problem was, the pools locked
themselves away by closing all the exits. Worse, they summoned guards to
protect themselves. For the big monsters to be defeated, it would take 5
parties -- one to kill the monsters in the center and one for each pool. Each
would have to be strong enough and capable enough to withstand the beating
they would take.

As it turned out, the parties involved got the right idea. Unfortunately,
because they didn't get to the boss fight fast enough, too many mudders had
gone to sleep and the required number to finish the monsters off just wasn't
there. Events of this size in the future will have to get around this issue,
for example, they could be announced well ahead of time.
