I think the problematic part (for me atleast) is this map of the area that
you are proposing. IMO there is less need to do any personal exploration
of the place if you already have a map of it (possibly a map that says in
what direction to go to get to avoid some of the nasty mobs and get to the
treasure).

If done properly though, this could probably be a quite valuable resource.

Umm, make maps available on www.bat.org for all areas, but only show them when
you are logged into the website, and only show the rooms that your character
has visited :)

I think that such a feature would be abuseable (assuming that the admins
don't intend for us to be able to check where we have been).
Also, such a resouce would just simply become the default place from
which all maps originate and are distributed. It would be rather hard
to stop better explored players from distributing the maps that are
accessible to themselves.

Dude, don't be a homo. People already have maps and walkthroughs but do they
mail them to everyone that plays bat? No. Friends will share info with
friends, sure. But imagine the pull of a nice AJAX webpage that shows you your
position on the global map of the Bat realm, plus where you are (and have
been) in the area that you're currently in. Would be SUPA cool.

I wasn't objecting to the maps etc, I'm was just saying that a
restriction based upon a characters explore would be pointless
(and exploitable - you could see much more easily where to go
to get extra rooms).

Umm, so what? If you are any sort of explorer, you'd have a fairly good idea
where you've been and haven't anyway. It would be a feature that would
encourage exploration, both for noobs and people who have been playing for
years. I really don't see your rational for poo-pooing the idea. Exploitable?
hoho, yeah sure. If you have a pen and paper then you can do the same thing,
but we're trying to save trees remember and make the game more fun? Also, I
think it helps to come up with nice ideas that would be fun to code too...
