BatMUD Forums > Bs > Re: language filter?

In order to appeal to a wider group of players (and increased player
retention), it would be nice to see BatMUD add the functionality of even a
very simple language filter. This could be implemented globally as a 'set'
option, but probably the best way to implement this would be through the
BatClient. Using the client would allow the player a method to customize
filtered language (perhaps in a text box under a Filter tab.) It should be on
by default (with a set group of a few obvious words), but a simple matter to
disable, for those who enjoy 'colorful language'. This would allow BatMUD to
be played in a family environment, or by those who for religious or moral
reasons do not desire to encounter foul language.

Ideally, the filter would activate for player-entered text (including
bird/guard emotes), but not for MUD-generated text (items, NPCs, etc.)

While a filter can never be 100% effective, even the simplest of filters can
block out 90% of offending text.

While I am sure this will receive some negative votes (since we long ago
scared away any who would support it), such a feature would take all of 20
seconds to turn off for those who doesn't wish to use it.

Who are you, relative of Lamar Smith?

Anyhow, if you are a person who requires censorship in order to play
something, you shouldn't be playing it.

If you have kids watching the screen, and you really think that censoring
'bad words' is the answer, use your client to replace them with *****.

If you're saying this for religious reasons, then you should saddle
your ass and ride away.

DISCLAIMER: My opinion here does not represent the BatMUD
guidelines enforced by archwizard, but is solely my own rant.

PS. No, really, use your client to censor the text if it's necessary.

Yes, as in 'do-it-yourself-if-you-really-need-it'.

I think this is about the worst attitude a wizard can have. If you are not
looking to improve the game for others, what is the point of immorting?

The original suggestion was not intended for self-use, but rather for other,
new members to our community who are not familiar with coding triggers. Simply
telling new-comers to the game, 'Hey, deal with my bullshit language, figure
out trigger code, or get the fuck out', isn't a viable and sustaining attitude
for the MUD, imho. Some others may disagree.

My suggestion for Acidia would be to rethink why you decided to immort in the
first place. If you're not up to the challenge of improving the MUD for
others, there are others who will step up to the task.

Some people do not consider censorship as an "improvement". Besides,
most of the foul language is created by players themselves. Are you
saying that we should moderate channels by default according to what
we (or somebody at that point) finds offensive? You can turn channels
on and off, use ignore and so forth. Besides the newbie channel is
already moderated by helpers to keep it clean.

My 'attitude', as it were, like I stated is totally my own and does
not represent the opinion and/or rules set by the arches (hence this
was posted in BS). This was my own opinion about censoring words,
and it has nothing to do with my actual contributions to this game.
Are you saying that I should stop everything just because I disagree
with your way of looking at things?

And what's this thing about 'Worst attitude a wizard can have.'?
I can think of far worse. You think an opinion about how a player
should moderate his own experience of a game is 'the worst attitude
one can have'? You must lead a very exiting game.

Here's a thought: If you really want to pursue this path, and
ban "naughty words", why don't YOU make a triggerset for censoring
and share it with the world? That way you could also contribute
to this game and show that YOU are up to the challenge?

Peace out.

My first thoughts were the same as Acidias. All the more so because filtering
all output to all players mudside could be incredibly taxing and could
potentially lag the mud. It would have to be done smartly indeed so that no
unnecessary checks would have to be made all the time.
Clientside is the way to go, and I don't see any reason why someone couldn't
create a batclient plugin for this, if someone has the spare time and energy
to do it.

If you can't handle the occasional 'shit' or 'fuck' you should not be on
the internetz.

I think the point that people are trying to make is that Batmud is an
ADULT game, and therefore has adult language. As was said in other groups,
newbie helpers do moderate the newbie channel to keep profanity to a minimum
there, but elsewhere in the mud its kitty-bar-the-door. As an adult you
should have hte right to decide if you want to see salty language or not.
That is YOUR decision. If the language bothers you, you have a few choices.
The most extreme, and honestly, I don't think really anybody wants, is to
quit the game. You could also turn off channels that seem to generate
the language that offends you, but as thats most other channels beyond
newbie, that kind of puts you in an information vaccuum. So you can use
your client software to gag/substitute the words you dont wish to see.
If you dont know how to write triggers, plenty of people on the mud are
glad to help with this. They may look at you a little funny when you tell
them why you want this trig, but they will help.

If you do create a trigset for filtering the words, and want to share
it with others, and cant find a site to put it, talk to me, I'll give you
an account on my linux box and you can post it there.
