So, I talked it over with a few "highbies", some "oldies" and some newbies and
some other average players that dont need to be named, and we were discussing
a lot of the new tunes and the impacts they made on the game. The first
conclusion is, the continents werent really that bad, if you have wanderers
and navs, and/or a highend ship. Otherwise, your sitting in the middle of
furnachia trying to exp when your mom calls you to dinner or such and you have
to get yelled at for a half an hour because of the travel time it takes you to
chest your onog axe and precious diamond o-yoroi. The state of the game is
this, cold
hard fact, a lot of people left because of continent tune, now this may been
the final nail in the coffin for some, but for others this just made the game
unplayable. New players, it must be hard to be a new player, playing a text
based game your friend told you was awesome, and now your sitting on some
stupid ferry waiting to travel to some continent so you can wander around
aimlessly in the huge continents, whats the point of ferries, whats the point
of all the space you might be asking yourself. Good question. Along with
many reading this post, not having navs, would definitely make this game
impossible for me to play, If I
casted teleport without error on laenor and did not get to my castle room in
roth, I wouldnt be here right now playing this game. We need new players to
survive, I dont care how silly it sounds, without new players, this mud will
eventually be inhabited by grumpy oldies talking about, "back in my day,
reincin was so much easier". Old players, you run forever to get to areas,
and you get there, and there is a shitty tune/ its raped/ its empty so you
have run again forever to get to another area to see the same thing sometimes.
But for most older players, I guess you know everything, you have wanderers a
huge 10-15m ship that sails to a continent in 5 seconds and you dont care,
cause its all the same to you. But I
disagree, so the solution, I have no clue, seriously, Im not saying bring
back the old map, but why the hell are these maps so big? Why, _must_ we use
ferries now? Its just weird, all these hindrances to my playing and why the
hell am I still here? Its just because I love this game, the versatility you
have in creating and enjoying your character and then two weeks later changing
it up completely. In my opinion this game should always keep just that, the
ability for versatility and the ability to just do whatever you want, not be
tied down by weird ferry systems or reinc systems, not have to have navs or
wanderers. And I understand stupid people are going to say you can play this
game as a nomad ranger, and everything is fine, just keep running, seriously
run, dont stop now, your almost to beast lands or so.

Flame on, I'm going to sleep.

I stopped playing because of TBC.

I play WoW becasue I can sign on when I want to play (evenings EST USA after
kids go to sleep) and spend less than 5 minutes getting a party to go kill
something interesting.
I also like how WoW needs more skills than batmud. As people who have done eq
with me will know I have no hands. Doing eq in batmud requires 1-2 people who
know the mob and everyone else to just blast/prot when they are told to. In
WoW I have to be paying more attention and understand/react to what is
happening much better.

Jesus christ. You play a healing paladin and claim it to require skill ?
You must be playing a different WoW than the rest of us ...

All of the Long Island crew who I know in real life
except for 2? have moved to WoW. Getting rid of old
players and attracting newer ones is healthy for any
game, so the travel tune was good for batmud though.

Just have to love these "Retired", "Quit Because of Continents" and
"My RL is Better Than Your RL" people who still log on to spew the
same old crap week after week.

You people have serious detachment problems.

That's like calling repeatedly your ex-girlfriend, who dumped
you years ago, to tell her how cool your new girlfriend is.
You really think the Ex gives a shit? You know how pathetic
you look by doing that?

I hear a lot of talk about how sucky it is to be in a game where you sit for
15-20 mins on a boat to get to another continent, and yadda yadda yadda. In
just about every negative post about the new tune, someone goes on about how
people left because its so hard to get from place to place, and travel and it
takes so long to do anything, etc.

Now, not for nothing, but I have played a number of graphics mmorpg's
including but not limited to Everquest (where I distinctly remember having to
take a ferry to another continent for some quest item thin, which took several
minutes of sitting and doing nothing on a poorly drawn boat), and final
fantasy 11 (which iirc i spent a lot of time running though vast wilderness,
once again, for some newbie - yes newbie - quest, not killing anything because
99% of the stuff i was passing would eat me whole) and experiencing the very
same bs that people whine about why they hate this game and LOVE other games.

Personally, and I understand that my opinion will be flamed and ignored, but
soley for the 3 people with the brains enough to get it, I believe the problem
is NOT the continent tune, its not even that the continent tune was the last
straw... people just like pretty pictures and flashy colors, and the art of
imagination is dying in a world spoon fed with images from someone ELSES
imagination.

I mean, really... why go through the 'trouble' of stimulating your brain to
imagine a fantasy world, when you can just vegetate to blinking lights.
Right?

This mud is seeing a decline of players. It's not any tune, as much as cranky
old mudders want to whine about. It's just a sad fact that people today just
want to leave their imaginations at home.

It is sad to consider, but unless this game as a whole makes a move to
something more graphical it's more than a possiblity that, though uncertian as
to how long, the mud's days are numbered. I understand it has been discussed
by player and admin alike, and in the end decided that going graphical is just
not going to happen. I, personally, amd fine with this, as I love things the
way they are, and enjoy the game and all its bits and bytes even more for NOT
being anything more than what it wants to be. I love the fact its text based,
I love the work that is done by the immorts, and I enjoy (at times) the silly
flame wars that flare up now and again. I will gladly play, and enjoy, every
last line of text that crosses my telnet screen, untill the day I try to log
in and it says that no server exists (be that in 1 year or 10 years or never).
The end result though, is that eventually pretty colors will win over text,
no matter how advanced a gameing system it might be. THe same shit you all
bitch about every day exists in every other game out there, I CHALLENGE you to
find where it doesnt. Just enjoy the game, dammit.

</end rant>

Here in endless incohereance, Yours truely
