WTF is this BS about realism again?
It's so annoying when shitty tunes get approved cause of realism.
Face it, this game has near to zero to do with realism.
Trolls don't exist and bunnies don't cast magic missiles.
If you want to drown yourself, then let it happen. It's been a part of this
game for a long time and I just dont want this realism bs to change it.

Sorry if i misunderstood and whined for wrong reasons.

Eraser makes a strong point regarding realism being a justification
for some change. However, I'd like to make a counterpoint:

A change towards "realism" can also been seen as a move towards
a richer environment that more intuitive. For example, the addition
of disabling wounds might not make game play any easier, but it
is quite easy to understand what such a "wound" might mean and what
might be done about it and further possibilities are added.

Going in the opposite direction, it would be possible to create
some functionality that assesses how long it would take for a party
to kill some mob, and what the resulting losses (eq damage, hp/sp/ep,
age etc) might be. Then you could just walk in, type kill and get a
"Please wait...." message for some minutes followed by "You failed"
and a suitable distribution of party members to hell/heaven and back
to their start locations.

Ok, so the swimming thing might be more annoying than fun, but, as
I have said before, I don't see a great deal of difference between
chancing my luck when crossing some river and chancing my luck for
on an extra round or two of combat while grinding exp.

Mind you, I think I'd change my mind if our characters had to perform
virtual jobs for gold to buy food etc.

You sort of misunderstood. The reason I did the bypass-tune was the assumption
that the swimming tune was originally meant for newbie protection. This not
being the case, I had no place to add the bypass to begin with, so I rolled
the change back.

I love how people reason that a fantasy game should not
strive for realism because "it has trolls and magic and
that is not realistic either".

Realism in game mechanics and realism in storyline/content
are two different things.

Realism in game mechanics strive to make the game systems
act in a way that is predictable for the players. Example:
you try to swim too far, you will drown. You get too wounded -
you die.. You go without eating - you start to starve.

Realism in game content, means no orcs, no dragons, no
spellcasting. Basically we would be a textbased copy of
Counterstrike (or Sims).

Don't confuse the two "realisms" as they are not related.

P.s. this post does not in any way address the actual
idea of drowning or whether it is good or bad.

Ok, I admit, the trolls and magic was a bad example.
But do you admit that the other "realism" is very hazard explanation for a
change to something that has been a part of this game a long time?
And if we take this swimming example for futher realism check, you should
either drown right away if you cant swim at all, or atleast try to flounder
back to shore gaping for air.
Some things are just better off the way they are and not try to make them more
realistic because you cant get to fully realistic anyhow (atleast in this
case).

And Ulath, if you are reading this, what is the reason for this tune at all if
the newbie aspect is no good? Why did you remove the option to change the
swimming behaviour and let the tune stay instead of going all the way back to
old by removing entire thing?

As I wrote, my post had nothing to do with the swim/drown
subject (just like the "trolls and magic" are not tied
to the realism of game systems).

I don't know enough of the swimming/drowning thing, but
in general I would agree that on some occasions we have
gone for realism at the expense of playability and fun,
and that is the wrong approach.

oohoo boohoo i cant use my 1 button to macro run to any monster because there
is a river. get a grip, they should implement 20rooms/hb movement for non
mounted and more for mounted users if you ask me. stupid that one can run from
1 place to another in a single second. and those who don't like walking then
go party and ask for a fucking summon

Example of game systems that should act in a way that is predictable:
A squirrel hitting a player in fullarmour should not do any damage. This is
realism, saying the squirrel finds a hole in the suit and hits there is not
realism.
A player should not be able to miss a gigantic whale in melee-combat.
A system that scales anything based on player level should not exist. An
example being ferry-prices.
A system that makes player shout loud when he's about to do something is
beyond comprehension.
To cut this short, some certain wizard wondered why players have nothing
better to do than whine about a non-issue swim-tune, I wonder why wizards have
nothing better to do than tune a non-issue swimming realism.
