Bring them back once a year for a day. Have them sprout sometime each spring.

However, the incessant whining for navtrees has persuaded me to believe in
it's wisdom, but here's my idea how to do it:
Create a new player race, navtree. Let them start their life in a seedling
form that can walk about, and then when they've found a good spot they can
take root there.
After that, they spend the rest of their reinc in that spot and act as
navtrees.
