A little bit more details for those that are curious about the
new client.

It will be written in Java and should hopefully thus run on
Windows, Linux as well as most other popular Unix variants. No
promises about Macs.

It will offer windowing capabilities, including grouping channels,
combat and other such messages into their own windows.

In the initial release, there will be window for room descriptions
and ascii maps.

It will detect hyperlinks seamlessly.

It will offer full RGB support (many more colors than the standard
ANSI colorset).

It will implement its own proprietary set of control codes between
the MUD and the client. The specs for these may become public
eventually so that they can be implemented as scripts/triggers into
other clients.

It will look cool. :)

In future releases: graphical inventory handling, graphical party
status display, hp/sp/ep gauges etc.

The client is not mandatory - it will remain fully possible to play
BatMUD using your current clients. The client is mainly designed to
allow an easier entry into the game, especially for people who find
the standard telnet interface way too crude, but will hopefully also
be of value to more seasoned players.

Just to clarify, but will the new client be free or have donations more than
paid for the project?

Maybe I didn't understand your question, but seems to me your two
options aren't mutually exclusive.

It will be free for our players. Any costs associated with develop-
ment is handled by B.A.T. ry.

Do the existing standards suck or don't they exist
or what is the reason we chose to do a proprietary?

Are we trying to protect the client from being
used by other muds or what? (which should be done
in my opinion :) But if we publish the specs...

Someone please explain, I'm confused. I know
nothing of any current standards and for me
the word 'proprietary' is a swear word :)

The current "standards" (like MXP) suck for the purposes that we
are looking for, and are badly implemented in most clients.

And yes, the client will be protected so that it will not be used by
other MUDs. It is not a general purpose MUD client, is a client for
BatMUD. We will see about making the specs public, but right now
nothing has been decided. There may not be a big need for it either,
since you will still be able to connect to BatMUD just like you
currently do with any MUDclient of your choice.
