I am also a complete noobie about ships, but i can say one thing very easily:
this pirate/merchantman thing was just not well thought out and should be
tuned quickly. It is WAY too easy for one good player to get a rocking pirate
ship and go around fucking everyones game. A good friend of mine poured tons
of money into his ship and he loved it, ooga sank it and he left the game.
Well I understand that its "part" of the game, but b4 you could just not own a
ship, now you HAVE to own a ship, and we've seen how well "no pkill rules"
muds work. THey dont. Basically on the high seas now you have a "no pkill
rules" mud, and essentially a lotta noobies will get their ships sunk by
people who are just "playing the game" as the rampant dickheads claim.

Actually, ship combat is currently quite heavily balanced towards the
defensive side. Not all offensive ship abilities are active yet, damage still
needs some tuning, anchoring gives you a pretty quick protective barrier -
during which you can repair your ship. and if you can get to a harbor
(granted, there are only a few atm, but when pcities are back on the map,
that'll change again) you are <completely immune>.

So, you're right to say that it's unbalanced, but in the wrong direction. The
reason some pirates are successful is that no one really hunts them, and
they've got a reputation. For example - it is very, very, very difficult for a
class 3 ship to sink a class 6, even if that class 3 is a pirate.

Hang on a second. I may be missing something since I have no real experience of
this, but I do have a ship and I Blaykes comments still appear to be valid (and
worrying).

The scenario that I see is that myself and probably a lot of other players are
going to find a ship useful but are not going to be able to afford a class 5
or 6 ship. Also, even with a new way to get special crew, I really don\'t see
many players having a full crew all at max level and also all the additional
ship upgrades and items. So, I doubt that many ships are going to be able to
outrun the better pirate ships. Surely this means that there is very little
one can do to avoid being sunk by someone with a ship that really is well
built to sink other ships.

Ok, so perhaps there will be some pretty decent navy ships that go out and sink
pirates. But I don\'t yet see how this would alleviate any actual problems that
allowing pirates might cause.

If I had a nice pirate ship, fast but not necessarily with the best
offense;/defence, couldn\'t I just wait around of easy opportunities where
I\'d be relatively safe from navy ships and I could easily sink lesser
merchant craft? Even traps can probably be escaped from by the same tatics
that any fast merchant ship could escape a slower pirate.

Doesn\'t this mean that one might end up in a situation in which a few top
pirate ships will just be able to run around sinking smaller vessels almost at
will? I don\'t much like the sound of a situation in which ships become quite
integral to the game but only with an ever present risk of being sunk.

Ok, now for some constructive suggestions (which you may already have thought
about). What if, the amount of rep gained or lost from a sucessful pirate
attack were related to the value of cargo on in the hold of a ship (I can see
this may be a bit tricky) and also (based on an idea someone else suggested)
an opt out of the +stat for the sailor guilds might automatically lower the
rep gained by a pirate for sinking you. Alternatively, perhaps sucessful
attacks without top loot for the pirate crew could cause rep loss or crew
moral loss for the pirate. Essentially some system could be added to make most
ships, which just carry people or wood logs etc. around, not worth attacking
unless under special circumstances. Obviously this would need to be indicated
to pirates in some way.
