In order to appeal to a wider group of players (and increased player
retention), it would be nice to see BatMUD add the functionality of even a
very simple language filter. This could be implemented globally as a 'set'
option, but probably the best way to implement this would be through the
BatClient. Using the client would allow the player a method to customize
filtered language (perhaps in a text box under a Filter tab.) It should be on
by default (with a set group of a few obvious words), but a simple matter to
disable, for those who enjoy 'colorful language'. This would allow BatMUD to
be played in a family environment, or by those who for religious or moral
reasons do not desire to encounter foul language.
Ideally, the filter would activate for player-entered text (including
bird/guard emotes), but not for MUD-generated text (items, NPCs, etc.)
While a filter can never be 100% effective, even the simplest of filters can
block out 90% of offending text.
While I am sure this will receive some negative votes (since we long ago
scared away any who would support it), such a feature would take all of 20
seconds to turn off for those who doesn't wish to use it.
