If i aint in quite the right spot when i cruise to waypoint on a tradelane. I
seem to sail the whole way not on it (maybe just 1-2 rooms off it).

Couldn't my level 6 navigator just move those 2 rooms on to it for me?
Or am I missing something ?

Despite the negative rating, I agree fully with your sentiments ;).
Unfortunately, realizing you're "near" to a tradelane amounts to a low level
pathfinding algorithm (that does seem to crop up a bit doesn't it?).

Someone made a suggestion of an alternate tradelane system that I like, and
which would automatically bypass this "gotta be on the lane exactly" issue.
The only problem is that it would require quite a lot of work to get done, and
there are more interesting ship projects out there to work on (quests, areas,
events).

So, I'm afraid that the system will likely stay as it is for quite a while.

Maybe let ship move as fast as if it was on tradeline even if it isn't, if it
starts cruise or cruisepath from tradeline room (water with orange whale's
pisses or something). At last as long as it stays on water. Or maybe just
remove all tradelines and let ships move that fast normaly while on water.
