Topic for debate: In the old map there was some equality between the ship
classes in terms of transit, some preferring to sail straight overland with a
class five ship and some preferring to use a class three ship over water with
waypoints. With the new maps things have changed. Low-ep roads penetrate
throughout the continents. Huge areas of water provide easy ship access to
significant parts of most of the maps. The importance of oceanic travel in
general is quite high.
As such, class three vessels with their spectacular water speed may now be far
and away too useful compared to the higher and significantly more expensive
ship classes, considering the significantly higher cost for the higher ship
grade hull additions and fully fleshed out crews. Discuss.
Clearly the gap between classes 3 and 5 have widened a bit due to the greater
amount of water, however that doesn't necessarily mean that a higher class
isn't worth it. For some people, the knowledge that they can cross any terrain
is quite nice. There's also the teleportation chamber that becomes available
at class 4. With more crew, you can stock up on more special abilities (a
relatively small bonus at this point, I grant, but still a bonus). There are
also the increased combat abilities, which is what the class 5s were really
designed for.
In the end, I think that the question of "is it worth it?" will depend on your
own playing style.
Any other opinions on the matter? My goal has always been to keep some
balance between classes 3,4,5, and I would be interested to know if that has
been minorly or majorly affected.
Oh yes, and one other factor that may make combat more useful for the
non-piracy oriented player - NPC ships should start making an appearance in
the next few months, and will have various rewards for their sinkings.
