I appreciate the work that's been done to make ship combat more interesting,
but imho it's made it more boring. Last night I chased a stupid 1 gemmer 2/3
of the way around furn trying to start combat with a ram...luckily after
hitting it a couple times (which took several tries cuz the damn boat kept
cruising away and 'skipping' rooms where i was waiting for it in doing so), it
stopped for an old fashion slug fest. It seems just like ramming was the only
way to do it before, grappling and using the new crews is the only way to
practically do ships? I have NO desire to use cannons based on rumors? that
they can randomly explode and kill crew members. Not worth losing a level 10
lift mage just so I can use cannons. Anyhow, from what i hear all of the old
ranged attack stuff wasn't very effective at combat.
So that's my complaining. My recommended solution is to slow the pirates down
so that ramming still is semi-practical. Also a tune/clarification on the
risk to crews of using cannoneers would be nice too.
I really do like ships, maybe i'll adapt to the new combat style...but right
now i'm quite frustrated with it.
It seems as if you are basing your opinion entirely on rumors. Perhaps your
should perhaps at least give things a try and form your own opinion here, as
whining about hearsay is not exactly a valid way to provide feedback. As far
as the ineffectiveness/riskiness to ranged combat, I bet if you ask around a
little more, you might find someone who also bothered to read the combat
helpfiles instead of trying it once with an obvious poor result. When I was a
mortal, and even before I tuned all the combat options to be better, I still
used cannons over ramming.
