Ok, I recently had a compass to kill, it ended up being over land. No worries
I thought... I managed to match heights pretty easily and started ramming. I
did
get grappled a few times, but was able to break free without the headaches
that some have reported. As the combat progressed i get this message from
my crew leader:
Hansolo tells you 'Preparin ta ram Gorehound3!'
Hansolo tells you 'Tha Gore Hound tis too high 'bove for us ta be able ta ram
it!'

So I check my own height with the 'cosole height' command...
The height lever is set to 10.
The lever is locked.

Then I wonder if maybe my ship is damaged more than the other ship, so
I do a ship scan to get their hps, and check mine as well.
Gore Hound [H:13/S:100/R:100] {gorehound3 <aggressive>} (pirate galleon)
[above]

The ship's hull is showing signs of moderate damage. (78%)
The sails are flapping in the wind. (100%)
The rudder is functioning perfectly. (100%)

How can a ship so much more damaged than mine be flying so much higher?
Does their crew have *that* much better weed than mine?

Also, it seems if you kill a ship over land, it sinks WAY faster than
if over water. Also there doesn't seem to be similar messages showing
the progress of "sinkage" for lack of a better word, when the ship is
crashed over land rather than sinking in water.

Anyway, just some anomolies with npc ships vs player ships that have
come to my attention and are mildly annoying, to say the least.

well, the ship had only 13% of it's hull left and the hull isn't that important
while you are flying so I would assume the reduced weight of the ship allowed
it to fly higher than you. I would say try to grapple it next time so it won't
escape you, but since boarders aren't ingame yet your best chance is to shot it
down with the trebuchet.

About Hairs problem with the ship being too high to ram, even though you're
locked in on height 10. After ramming the ship once, you exhaust your lift
power, and you need to let the magis "recharge" a while before you're able to
ram again. You'll see this if you unlock your height lever and/ or try to move
it to 10 right after a ram. Your crew leader will tell you something along the
lines of "we need to let the lift magis recover...".
